Secret CIA operation? That 's old news

  • Follow Letters

The New York Times reports that congressional Democrats are asking for an investigation into the Bush administration because a secret CIA operation to kill al-Qaida leaders was not previously disclosed to Congress.

Is the state of our news media so deteriorated that they no longer conduct basic research? The Times has conveniently forgotten their own previous reporting on this operation. On Dec. 15, 2002 the Times headlined an article "Bush has widened authority of CIA to kill terrorists." Within five minutes I found dozens of other articles similarly titled, but then I'm just a housewife and not a big shot reporter for the so-called "paper of record."

Congress conveniently has forgotten that they authorized this program on Sept. 18, 2001, with Public Law 107-40, Joint Resolution, Section 2, which permitted the president to use all necessary and appropriate force against those who planned, aided or harbored the terrorists involved with 9-11.

It's almost as though congressional Democrats aren't serious about national security. Or maybe they're just trying to ensure we all forget that when Republicans lost control of Congress in 2006, unemployment was only 4.5 percent, and it now stands at about 10 percent nationally. Michigan and a handful of other states are looking at 15 percent unemployment.

Obumbler is tanking in the polls, the wheels are falling off Obumblers programs, and unemployment is rising so the Main Stream media in a desperate effort to prop up Obumbler drags out the evil ghost of Bush Chaney to scare the folks...

Liddy was not pardoned by Bush.

No, Bill Clinton was disbarred.

Unhappy with Obama

If the Democratic party cared at all about this country and about the safety of this country they would be praising Pres Bush for alll he did to protect us, instead some of the Democratic, with President Obama leading them wish to totally destroy this country by giving in to our enemies. I look so forward to our next Republican Administration and a Republican congress in 2012 that will once again get this country back on the right tract. I just hope and pray that God will protect us from Obama and his puppets until we vote him out.

Well, the wheels are starting to fall off of everything else the Dems are trying to do so they think the only win they have left is to try to pin something on a Bush official. I doubt if they will do anything but make more noise. But, on the bright side, during the next administration we can look forward to the investigations of illegally taking control of banks and automobile companies by taking stock and placing government appointees on the BODs. Also for threatening bank officials in order to strong arm them into buying a company they did not want because it was in such bad shape. Personally, I'd rather have an administration that was erring on the side of national security than an administration that was erring on the side of Marxism. It remains to be seen, on both sides, whether anything illegal was done. But investigations make headlines. Oh, and justus4, Bush did not pardon Libby, he commuted his sentence. The conviction stands. As usual, you leave out the full story just like you with your other famous incident.

Unhappy: you forget 9/11 happened on Bush's watch, so he did not "protect" us and even ignored the warnings. The letter ignores the basic fact that Congress is required by law to inform certain members of Congress of covert operations.

Unhappy, one question. Under what presidency did more Americans DIE on American soil from foreign attack than any another? a. G W Bush b. G W Bush c. All of the above, here's a hint a,b, and c are all correct.

concernednative on Mon Jul 27, 2009 2:17 PM Who let the most attacks happen on American Soil. Why that would be Bill Clinton, World trade center first time, two US Embassys, The USS Cole. Clinton's failure to do any thing emboldened the terrorists to attack again. Clinton lso hampered efforts to collect intelligence by seperating domestic FBI operations from foreign CIA data not allowing agencies to compare material...

Even if Clinton failed at all those things, how does that exonerate George Bush?

Posted by concernednative on Mon Jul 27, 2009 7:38 AM....Grouse, seems the writer has already said "they authorized this program on Sept. 18, 2001, with Public Law 107-40, Joint Resolution, Section 2, which permitted the president to use all necessary and appropriate force against those who planned, aided or harbored the terrorists involved with 9-11." I don't believe Congress passed such a law without being briefed. If authorized, why give a special briefing on a plan that was never implemented? BTW, I would welcome an investigation so that Pilosi, et al, can be subpoened to see who is lying here. This iis nothing more than an attempt by the DIMs to get the public's eyes off the Capa dn Tax, and socialized Medicine ball, not to mention the ever rising unemployment though he rpomised the porkulus bill would steml that..

Justass4 says that "The Bush/Cheney regime failed to comply with established laws and they MUST be held accountable for their failures." When are we going to have BimbObama and the DIMs account for their failures as they sure as hell haven't accomplsihed one damn thing other than spend our kida and grand kids into eternity.

I've read that the secret force that reported directly to Cheney was not CIA but military.

For the first time since Abraham Lincoln, the military was authorized to carry out attacks within the United States on apartment buildings and office complexes. This was strickly forbidden in 1878 by the Posse Comitatus Act that prohibits the use of the military for domestic law enforcement. This was probably a good thing for the Katrina aftermath, but is not a good thing in general.

The military has spent close to $1 billion on campaigns to win public support for inititives. It's seems to have worked very well. Restrictions have been placed on the following constitutional amendments: 1, 4, 5, 6, and 8. The only one that makes people mad is amendment 2 on the right to bear arms.

Anyone can be declared an "enemy combatant" and be hauled off by the military for questioning.

Here's one of many links to what our previous president thought about the Constitution.

They are foreigners they were just legally visiting the US. They hadn't become naturalized or anything. And how about eating crow on those statistics that I was so stupid on before. If I go study abroad or anything I still would be a foreigner.

According to scorehouse anyone legally visiting the US isn't a foreigner. That is great get a passport come to the US and you are a citizen. Jeez, you people that consider yourselves so smart say some of the darnest things.

Jose Padilla is an American citizen who was arrested in 2002 and detained as a material witness on suspicion of plotting a dirty bomb attack. He was later declared an enemy combatant by the former president and transferred to a military prison. By the executive orders based on the advice of John Yoo, he declared not entitled to a trial in civilian courts. He is currently sueing John Yoo for deprivation of his Constitutional rights and for alleged abusive treatment. Its the first time that a government official has faced personal liability for his role in the torture or deaths of detainees.

As per executive orders from the last president, foreigners or citizens declared "enemy combatants" are not entitled to constitutional rights. They can be detained indefinitely without accusation or trial (for citizens, violation of 6th amendment). They cannot expect an impartial trial by their peers or another other normal protections of due process of law or the Bill of Rights(for citizens, violation of 5th amendment). They can be tortured (for citizens, violation of 8th amendment). They do not have a attorney/client privilege, their conversations are monitored(for citizens, violation of lst amendment). In many cases, they have not been allowed to have a lawyer.

And by the way, the former president also granted himself the right to suspend press freedoms (violation of constitutional amendment 1) if he concluded it was necessary to wage the war on terror and to conduct warrantless eavesdropping on all Americans that include keystroke mapping on computers, monitoring emails, faxes and phone convertations (violation of Constitutional amendment 4 for search and seizure). The right to redress (violation of Amendment 1) by suing the government.

Give it up score. Some are incapable of understanding the difference in domestic and foreign. Don't waste your breath.

The Ode

Rahm and the boys at the White House know how ignorant a large percentage of the American public is so when Obama puts his foot in his mouth or his poll numbers start going down they drag out a "Bush is a white devil" story and get the press to run with it to get the focus off Obama. I guess you could say Obama's handlers are fairly shrewd if the mainstream public wasn't just so downright ignorant.
