Bottom line

Wise white male? You decide.

Sen. Lindsey Graham announced recently he would vote to confirm Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, despite grave reservations about her infamous past statements on the superiority of Latina judges.

"Elections have consequences," Graham said -- indicating the president should get his court picks confirmed whenever possible.

That's an admirable stance, but a naive one considering that it's not a sentiment that is often reciprocated by Democrats. Miguel Estrada, an exemplary lawyer nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals by George W. Bush, was actually prevented from taking office by a Democratic filibuster. He had a great up-by-the-bootstraps American story too. But apparently, being a Hispanic with an inspiring life story wasn't enough to override his being conservative.

When Lindsey (Golly) Graham drives on the beltway in that DC traffic I bet he eventually starts to back-up from trying to maintain the prescribed distances between vehicles. We would be better served if he were working for the state showing tourists the state butterfly, the eastern tiger swallowtail, while he was holding a net, wearing khaki shorts with shiny black socks pulled up to his knees, an alpine hat, a red kerchief tied precisely in front with a round turn and two half hitches knot and his left sleeve rolled up showing his tattoo of John McCain.

Sonia Sotomayor is a far more intellectually qualified to sit on the Supreme Court than is Clarance Thomas.

Riverman1

Interesting that Cain chooses Clarence Thomas for comparison. Read First Principles: The Jurisprudence of Clarence Thomas by Scott Gerber, a LIBERAL constitutional authority. Gerber rates Thomas a highly principled justice with an understanding of the Constitution beyond that of most members of the Court. He exposes the intellectual dishonesty of Thomas' critics.

Tigger_The_Tiger

Nice baseless comment there Cain. No doubt your OPINION is being touted as fact again. You will never change...............Has anyone ever heard Clarence Thomas make a racist comment?

concernednative

Miguel Estrada had NO judicial experience. It is not comparing apples to apples to compare him to Sotomayer. That is the republicans for you. They don't understand race or gender. To them Estada=Sotomayer, Palin=Clinton, Keyes=Obama, Steele=Obama it is not that simple. Repubs people are more than skin and gender.

2tired2argueanymore

Cain has been partying on the coolaid again.

dashiel

Has Thomas ever said anything about anything since he joined the Supremes?

mad_max

He's not supposed to say anything except in writing, with his opinions, where he enforces the Constitution. This is unlike Sotomayor who runs her mouth in public boasting that she sees her job as bending, or in the case of the firefighters, ignoring the written law to make NEW (liberal) policy.

Niko Mahs

I applaude Lindsey Graham. He is head and shoulders above your other Senator (Cream DeMint).

dashiel

But the vetting ends once you get the job. As for the cliche of justices legislating from the bench, that argument boils down to which side a justice comes down on. Like Earl Warren, Sotomayor is a pig in a poke, uh, let me rephrase that! In any case, I think we all can agree that Lindsey Graham is one wise Latina trapped in the body of a CONservative white male.

Rhetor

Have you all forgotten that she was first appointed to a federal bench by George H. W. Bush, a conservative Republican? The real reason for the negative opinions is a knee-jerk reaction to oppose all Obama initiatives. The rest is smoke screen.

Riverman1

GHW Bush appointed her on the advice of the NY senators. Do you think Obama will appoint judges down here on the advice of our senators? Doubt it. I also doubt future appointments to courts by a Republican president will be accepted quietly by the Democrats.

GnipGnop1

Oh you mean like the knee jerk reaction that the dems use to do the same? It's all politics and it is politics followed blindly. Just read any of cain's or angiesdad's (or whatever name he is calling himself now because the CIA is after him because he holds all the secrets to 911) posts or patriciathomas for that matter. The middle of the road voters have no reprensentation and that has a lot to do with why Obama got elected. There was really nobody to vote for. In the past 8 elections that I have voted in there was always a qualified candidate. Sometimes even 2. Not this time. 2 guys that have no business running this country. It's pathetic.

Niko Mahs

GnipGnop, the middle of the road voters (like me) overwhelmingly went for Obama for President in 2008. That's why he won Ohio, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, and Indiana to name a few. Independent voters are more middle of the road or Centrists. This country needs more Centrists and not more demanding Leftists or Right wingers.

mad_max

Niko...you may have thought you voted middle of the road but I think you ended up in the LEFT hand ditch.

Niko Mahs

That's certainly your opinion Mad Max; but I just do not happen to agree with you. And that's from a guy who has the same birthday as the real Mad Max.

disssman

In our zeal for an utopian society, how could we not admit Sonia to the highest court in the land? This is just another example of our great country in its downward drift. It looks more and more like 1984 will probably come about in the near future, brought about by our greed and inability to recognize an idiotic ideal when we see one. A perfect example of that is our desire to make heros out of charlatans.

grouse

The Chronicle, like all conservative outlets, chooses to mis-read Sotomayor's remarks and perpetuate a lie. Let them eat their own (Graham) if they choose to.

concernednative

Republican logic. Dems control presidency, both house of congress, 28 of 50 governerships. We need to be less inclusive and run farther to the right. Jeez

Tigger_The_Tiger

OK Grouse....give us the full context of her statements so that it does NOT sound racist/sexist. I'm tired of people saying she is being taken out of context by people who don't know what the context is. How hard is it to admit that she simply made a sexist/racist remark?
