Don't give up; time for dissent is now

  • Follow Letters

In response to William Zimmerman's letter to the editor ("Obama has won; I've given up the fight," July 13):

Winston Churchill once said, "When the eagles are silent the parrots begin to jabber." I believe this is the crux of America's current predicament. We have grown complacent. I am confident that our government no longer fears the people; however, I do not yet fear the government. Jabbering parrots don't scare me; eagles that turn into chickens do! Our liberties and Constitution are threatened but they still stand! Now is not the time for despair; it is the time for dissent -- which, as the saying goes, is the highest form of patriotism.

In July 1776, 56 men signed a document pledging to one another their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. By signing that document, they also signed their death warrants, risking everything for a vision of a great country. Some lost their lives and many lost their fortunes, but 233 years later their sacred honor still remains.

Where is ours? That so many would rather give up liberty to avoid conflict than fight for what they love is pathetically foolish. "A 'no' uttered from the deepest conviction is better than a 'yes' merely uttered to please, or worse, to avoid trouble," said Mohandas Gandhi.)

We must not surrender to the mainstream fascination of a president-king and his vision of a Euro-America. Flood the offices of this government with daily letters of opposition to current policies. Make demands and demand results! Never let them forget for whom they work. Never give up the fight!

As Abraham Lincoln said: "We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution."

Very well written letter! Hear! Hear!

Amy Peduto for Governor!

xanadu

Amy got it right. forget Governor, let's put her up for the Presidency in 2012. Or sooner, if the current inexperienced individual -- who acts like he doesn't even like America and is embarrassed to be an American -- can be persuaded to admit he has bitten off waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than he can chew and step down.

dashiel

Don't just do something. Stand there.

When you write an opinion piece to the local paper you should tightly focus on one issue and support it with several facts. To do otherwise is to speak gibberish. What liberties have you lost? If you are so concerned about some percieved danger to your country, pull your head out of that chicken coup and learn how to present a cogent argument.

LaTwon

liberties lost, since 1776....... freedom to own property without being taxed out of it, income tax, estate tax, right to the privacy of your records, private property rights, managed retirement, right to leave the country with your wealth, wire taps, warrantless searches, the list is long all the way to mandatory seat belts.

The president has kept us safe and I thank him for that. There were only 3 attacks un GW's watch. (Pennsylvania, pentagon, and N.Y.) Hello! Hello!

mad_max

Of course Obama has kept us safe so far. He hasn't changed anything that Bush/Cheney implemented. He knows not to mess with perfection. That's why he has kept all of Bush/Cheney's policies and programs. That's why GITMO is still open, wiretaps continue, Iraq and Afganistan continue, et.al. Thank you Obama for admitting Bush/Cheney were right.

GUH-RATE letter! I hope Amy is the tip of a 3M person iceberg.

Now that we've dispensed with jack234's daily crap, back to the issue. YES it is time for dissent!!! Amy Peduto is right. Flood the offices of your representatives with phone calls and emails. Attend any local meetings your representatives may have and sound off loud and clear. Move your money to tax free investments and starve these communists of revenue. Bring them to there knees because their popularity depends on our money to pass out to their constituents. Starve them out! They thrive on class warfare. Show them that their "enemy" can fight back because we control what they need.......money. If all that fails....well it may be time to "refresh the tree of liberty" with more radical means.

GACopperhead

This issue has become common with both Democrats and Republicans, neither party represents the MAJORITY of Americans, who are moderates.
Either party, today, is only a caricature of their former selves, both being on the extremes of their constituencies. It's my sincere hope that a candidate will come along in 2012 who represents mainstream America, not the far-left socialists, or the far-right "deciders". I still say throw ALL the bums out, as they neither represent the voters nor their country. It has become government of the government, by the government and for the government. Our representatives not longer serve the people or the country, they serve their parties.

Amy Peduto for Governor or even President! Hell, they've got nobody else anyway!

Steve Wylie

LaTwon, the items you listed at 8:48 are not liberties that were ever really in question. Taxation existed before the American Revolution, and it was fully expected to continue after. Discrepancies regarding your personal like or dislike of a tax do not constitute a loss of liberty but rather a concession for continued civilization as outlined by our founders. You have not lost any liberty, you just do not like the way things are being run. There is a tremendous difference which can easily be demonstrated by your taking a one way trip to Iran and screaming "I'm an American" to everyone you meet. I assure you that the list of your liberties will quickly shorten and you fully understand the message that you are communicating in this forum.

southernguy08 - Oh and you're witty too! What a bag.

What nonsense (the letter)! Obama is a democratically-elected President. Too bad for you, your guy didn't win. Quit listening to the unpatriotic Rush Limbaugh and attempt to think for yourself.

concernednative

Grouse, oh gruouse. The people are mostly birthers would rather go before a firing squad than say something could about Obama.

Fiat_Lux

The only people who have good things to say about Obama at this stage of the game he's playing are the millions of ignorant voter-losers who sponge off the rest of us while they live like animals ("But now we have OBAMA and he gon' take cayo black people." courtesy of a talk radio hate line last winter), and the people who have so thoroughly cheated and fleeced working Americans and their corporate investors that nothing Obama and his criminal cronies do to the Constitution and government policies will be able to touch them or their standard of living. The rest of us he is doing his dead-level best to ruin and turn into government serfs. Even the drooling mush-brained 'hopers' and warm-fuzzy optimists are beginning to see just how duped they were, if the latest approval polls are any indication. What good could anyone not on the dole think he's doing? He's robbing the middle class and people who have worked and earned and produced to fund wasteful, inefficient projects that will never work and bankrupt all of us. What good is there to say about someone who flies in the face of history and basic common sense? He's an arrogant, agenda driven, evil man, no matter where he was born.

LaTwon

yes we cant.................

It's quite obvious that Prezbho has acted "stupidly" beginning with the ghetto-fabulous inauguartion. He is a pompous, arrogant incompetent, and every decision which he has made thus far proves that he was elected on one issue only, and that is that he is a mulatto with a full compliment of campaign promises which can never come to fruition, and first-time voters who are not competent to exist on their own, much less form well informed decisions as to voting.

LaTwon

we obviously do not use the same meaning of liberty.
1. freedom from arbitrary or despotic government or control.
2. freedom from external or foreign rule; independence.
3. freedom from control, interference, obligation, restriction, hampering conditions, etc.; power or right of doing, thinking, speaking, etc., according to choice.

imdstuf

The bailouts, czars, raising of minimum wage, etc started under the last administration.

amypeduto

Mr. Wylie, you asked me to use facts regarding the liberties I have lost; however, I never claimed to have lost any liberties. Had you actually read my letter, you would know that I stated that our liberties are threatened, not lost. If you are going to lecture me about using facts, I suggest you get yours straight as well. To do otherwise is completely asinine.
Justus, how do you presume to claim my convictions are flawed? Oh yeah, I forgot ya'll always fall back on the ol' Bush-Cheney-Iraq attack. Move on.
Many thanks to my fellow patriots who supported and defended my letter. I'll see you guys on the front line!
