Furniture store's trade-in events timely for charity

Augusta Urban Ministries often receives requests for furniture quicker than it can fill them.

"These are requests for furniture assistance that still have to be filled," said program coordinator Melissa Elim, pointing to a small stack of papers on her desk. "We try to get as many clients served as we can as quickly as we can, but we don't always get enough donations in to do that."

That's why she eagerly anticipates the biannual delivery from La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries, she said.

The latest delivery, on July 15, included about 55 pieces of furniture. Each piece was checked for quality before being delivered to Augusta Urban Ministries, said Elaine Montano, the vice president of marketing for La-Z-Boy.

The furniture was collected during the store's semiannual trade-in event in April. Customers donate used furniture in exchange for credit on new furniture.

Customers also were able to donate $25 to Augusta Urban Ministries or the another charity to get credit on new furniture. The store collected $710 for the nonprofit.

"This is our fourth year doing this," said Martha Brown, chief communications officer for La-Z-Boy. "We began this partnership because we wanted to put the furniture we get from customers during the trade-in event to good use. We chose Augusta Urban Ministries because we believe in what they do for our community."

The delivery will make a big impact, Ms. Elim said.

"We're so thankful for the relationship we have with them," she said. "The furniture they bring in helps us help others. Thanks to them, there will be families who no longer have to sit on the floor."
