Commissioner stays mum on Vick timeline

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell isn't revealing when he'll decide whether to reinstate Michael Vick now that the former Atlanta Falcons star quarterback has been released from federal custody.

"The process is ongoing, and I hope to make a decision sometime in the near future," Goodell said Tuesday, a day after Vick's home confinement ended. He wouldn't define what "near future" means.

NFL training camps open for veterans next week. Goodell would not say when he'll meet with Vick. Even if Goodell reinstates Vick, the 29-year-old quarterback would still have to find a team willing to sign him. Vick served 23 months on a dogfighting conviction.

FALCONS: The team might be looking for offensive line depth now that veteran Jeremy Newberry , signed by the team in June, has retired.

Newberry's agent, Doug Hendrickson , said the 33-year-old's left knee "just kind of went out on him recently when he was pushing hard to get ready for training camp."

Newberry, a former longtime starting center for the San Francisco 49ers, was expected to provide depth at guard and center. He started three games for San Diego last season after starting each of his 14 games with Oakland in 2007.

DOLPHINS: Singer Marc Anthony is the latest music star to join forces with the team, becoming a minority owner.

New Dolphins owner Stephen Ross wants to reach out to new fans, and in South Florida, that automatically includes the Hispanic community. Singer Gloria Estefan and her husband, producer Emilio Estefan , bought a small stake in the club in June.

"I'm not doing this as a singer; I'm not doing this as an actor," Anthony said. "(It's) just because I love football. Steve and I, our visions are in sync, and this is a great, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of Steve's vision."

VIKINGS: Retired quarterback Brett Favre said last week that he will end all the speculation by July 30, but he might give the Vikings a decision before then.

NFL.com columnist Thomas George reported that Favre will announce whether he intends to play for the Vikings this season by Friday, according to people close to Favre.

The report said Favre believes his surgically repaired right arm can hold up for an entire season, but he "questions whether he wants to endure the toil of a training camp, a preseason, and all of the mandatory NFL minutiae."

Those concerns are not expected to prevent Favre from coming out of retirement for his 19th NFL season.

HARRISON ACCUSER SHOT: A Philadelphia man convicted for lying to police about being shot by Indianapolis receiver Marvin Harrison last year has reportedly been shot again.

Philadelphia TV station WTXF and the Philadelphia Daily News said Dwight Dixon was shot multiple times Tuesday. The shift director at Hahnemann University Hospital said Dixon, 33, was in critical condition late Tuesday. Police detectives told AP that no information was available.

Dixon was convicted of a misdemeanor in January for lying to police about the earlier shooting, which happened April 28, 2008. Dixon's lawyers said he initially lied to police because he feared Harrison.

UFL: Former Buffalo Bills quarterback J.P. Losman signed Tuesday with the Las Vegas franchise in the United Football League.

Losman, a first-round draft pick in 2004 out of Tulane, is the most notable player to sign with the fledgling UFL so far.
