Why do democrats demand rspect for anyone in their party but do not extend that same courtesy?
Sonia Sotomayor will be confirmed despite the attacks on her both by the editorial and Rick McKee's editorial cartoon offer to the rednecks and hate groups that she somehow represents the Klan (Augusta Chronicle, July 16).
The irony of the situation is that almost every Republican senator has stated that she deserves great respect for her knowledge, demeanor, experience and work ethic. The Chronicle is so way-out with its two messages that any respect for the thinking process that goes into The Chronicle requires hard swallowing.
The main objection to her by the Republicans is that she is a nominee of a Democratic president, and will keep the court certainly at status quo rather than overturn Roe v. Wade and other Republican desires. She does not fit with their idea that all judges should be like Chief Justice John Roberts, both in looks and ideas. In fact she has more judicial experience than Roberts had when he was nominated for chief justice.
Despite the grueling days of questioning, the Republicans must realize what a tough person she is and how respectful she has been at all times. The president has shown that he chooses correctly for the country's good. The real battle will come if the president has a chance to nominate a Supreme Court justice to replace one of the right-wing justices, which would prevent any further movement for overturning Roe v. Wade . Let's hope it's someone like Sotomayor in thought and experience.

Mr Greenbaum, thank you for wasting your monthly LTE allocation on such a trivial non-issue. Her confimation was never in doubt due to the partisan majority. Since she is replacing a left-wing nutcase, who mis-represented himself to gain appointment, it's no big deal. This devil we know. Maybe next month you can list some of the programs that President Obama has chaperoned that are providing positive dividends for America. I'm not sure a month is enough time to find any, but give it a try. We'll be waiting.
The only thing I can't understand is why the repubs further alienated hispanics and other minorities with the idiotic dog and pony show. They should have treated her better and let Rush and Sarah keep revving up the base. It would have given them a better chance on a national level.

The reason Sotomayor was complimented on her "...knowledge, experience, demeanor and work ethic" was so they wouldn't have to comment on any decisions she's rendered. Since she's replacing a far left wacko on the court, there's no change. No constitutionalist on the court would consider retiring while a nut case like Obama was president. Only an assassination would precipitate the scenario you fantasize about.

Sotomayor has had four of her decisions overturned by the Supreme Court. She clearly lack judicial understanding. Robert Bork in 5 1/2 years had NONE of his decisions over turned, yet based on his judicial philipsophy the Democrates assassinated Borks charactor, Borks hard work and his accomplishments. The Deomocrates are nothing if not hypocrites!
After the way Judge Alito was treated by the dems it must take a lot of nerve to criticize the repubs for their treatment of Sotomayor. Why don't you google comments by Sotomayor on how she thought she was treated.

The Republicans oppose Sotomayor, as all Americans should, because she doesn't believe in the rule of law and interpeting the law. Rather she believes her experience, her ethnicity, and her personal views will help her make better decisions than (as she stated) a "white male." Further she believes judges make policy rather than interpet the law. This disqualifies her to be a Supreme Court justice. The Democrats support of her is affirmative action of the worst kind, and it is destructive of our Constitution. That our nation has come to a point that certain leaders would support this is a disgrace and a shame. Once the highest court in the land can decide what they think rather than what the Constituion permits, we are approaching treason.
I think Jeff Sessions should go on SNL. He's a funny guy, but he's also missing a few links in the chain. And Cornyn looks like the CEO of a failed company. Nice interviewing white guys, the Latino Lady has really taken you to the woodshed and shown you up big time. Welcome to the Supreme Court, Justice Sotomayor! The NO votes for your nomination will come from the party of NO, the moaners & complainers who do not want to work at making the country better, thanks to their indoctrination by Karl Rove and the Rushbo (two plump, big head losers!).

Many of you opponents of Judge Sotomayor might want to worry that her appointment would make six Catholics on the court. In 1928, when Al Smith planned to build a tunnel from Vatican City to the White House, engineers didn't have the requisite personnel, equipment and materials. Engineering personnel, equipment and materials have improved exponentially over the past 81 years. The know-how to build a tunnel from VC to the Supreme Court Building is now readily available.

Soto was coached well. Just look at how she answered some of the questions and wasn't able to answer others with any form of reason or rationale. She rambled and it was hard to make any sense of some of her answers.
Oh and I'm sure that any woman would go for a guy with an email name of Bacon Grease!
