The face of GOD

The God that Michelangelo painted gazes upon his creation with an arm reaching out to Adam. He wears a white robe, surrounded by angels, and has a thick, graying beard.

LILLY BURGAMY, 5

That's mostly right, kids at vacation Bible schools decided this week.

More than 100 children volunteered to draw us pictures of the Almighty, and they included more than enough robes and beards to make Michelangelo proud.

Sometimes, though, a few children pointed out, God dresses up in flowers and rainbows. Sometimes, he appears with big muscles and super powers. Almost always, he is smiling.

With the help of program coordinators Sarah Byrd and Lillian Howard, we present these pictures from the vacation Bible schools at Bible Fellowship Church and Trinity-on-the-Hill United Methodist Church.

I feel for the kids. They're being labeled "Christian" or "theistic" before they've got the capacity to think about and decide these issues.

They don't need the capacity to think and decide these issues. Parents are supposed to teach them these things. No need to "feel" for them. They're headed in the right path unlike so many others.

"They don't need the capacity to think and decide these issues." Surely, that was a typo.

Oh no, kids got brainwashed so early.
There is no GOD scitificially. Kids do not know that, they only know what has been told.
Our community should help our kids learning science and math, not propaganda religion.
What's happening now is exactly why and how our kids fall behind in science and math comparing with kids in China or India...

I was impressed most by Kirsten's drawing (#3) of a rainbow.
...seldom seen and seldom appreciated.

Avesposito: I don't see a 'label'...and God is not an "issue"...
the problem is that we don't all worship God, the Heavenly Father. Some of us have our own little god to worship...

Arealist . . . . wow. Just wow.

Let me clarify... kids can't decide for themselves what is and what isn't, thats why adults must teach them. It was no typo, kids need to be taught the truth not left to decide for themselves. When they are adults then they can make up their minds. If kids were taught the truth about God then math and science would take take care of themselves. Does any rational thinking human being really think that the earth just appeared? Only an idiot could believe something that ridiculous. Science and math came from God... everything did, even you. Put God first and everything else falls in place.

"Does any rational thinking human being really think that the earth just appeared? Only an idiot could believe something that ridiculous." According to Genesis: God spoke. The earth appeared. Rational? Ridiculous?

I think children do need to be taught: depending on what you believe, God spoke and it was so. Or the big boom and it happened. Children need to be taught though. "Train a child in the way they should go, and when they are old, they willl not depart from it." True as it may be, some children may change their opinions as they are older (free choice) but some don't. If we don't teach them, they may never really know... I would be heart broken if my children never knew the truth because of what I did or did not do.

The pictures were great too. I love seeing the creatvity and imagination of kids.

As a Christian, I can neither prove or disprove the existence of God. I make the personal choice to embrace the scriptures as my source of authority. In doing so, I believe in the God spoken of in these writings. One of my favorite scriptures is "He who is of love is of God" (taken from John's letters, not verbatim) In this scripture alone, I find it possible to reveal God to my children in the act of simply loving them unconditionally. If they, in turn, learn how to love unconditionally, then I feel that I have fulfilled the whole law of scripture which is "Love one another as I have loved you" (Jesus Christ)
