An Augusta GreenJackets team hovering around the .500 mark for most of the season continued its dominance at home Tuesday night in a 9-1 victory over the West Virginia Power.
Coming off five losses in six games on the road, the GreenJackets have taken the first two games of a four-game home series against West Virginia. The Power own the best record in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division, but they were no match for a 45-43 squad with a 20-6 record at home over the past eight weeks.
"This club is a good club, and it's nice to get these wins at home," GreenJackets manager Dave Machemer said. "I guess we like the home cooking."
West Virginia's defense committed three errors and its pitchers walked seven, two with the bases loaded.
The turning point came in the sixth when the GreenJackets, already leading 2-1, got a second chance when Charlie Culberson's two-out pop-up was dropped in foul ground by first baseman Calvin Anderson. Culberson later drove in a run, and Vladimir Frias tripled in two more for a 5-2 lead.
"You don't always get a second chance like that," Culberson said. "But I got it and got a two-out, broken-bat single, then Frias followed with the big hit. That separated us from them and changed the whole game."
The GreenJackets piled on in the eighth when West Virginia reliever Yoffri Martinez, who came in with one out and two runners on, walked the first three batters he faced. Two more runs came in when James Simmons' grounder went between the legs of third baseman Jeremy Farrell.
Kyle Nicholson (5-8) got the win after striking out seven in six innings. He allowed two hits and a walk to start the fifth but got out of the bases-loaded, no-out jam with a pair of strikeouts and a fielder's choice.
"I walked the guy to load the bases, then just stopped and told myself I wanted to get out of it," Nicholson said.
