Car rams into pickup, home in Martinez

  • Follow Metro

A Monday-morning wreck ended with a Mercedes-Benz poking into the dining room of a Martinez home.

Perren Stapp, of the 3600 block of Bay Pointe in Martinez, was traveling on Stagecoach Way when his vehicle hit two mailboxes, crossed the street and hit a Dodge pickup parked in front of a mailbox, then crossed the street again and hit a house in the 700 block, said Columbia County sheriff's Deputy Greg Kernaghan.

"The damage punctured into the inside of the house," Deputy Kernaghan said.

"The left-front corner of the Mercedes was in the dining room."

The man in the Dodge Dakota, Donnie Thurmond, 39, of Augusta, had to be cut from the vehicle.

He was treated at Medical College of Georgia Hospital and released, an MCG spokeswoman said.

The driver of the truck, Andrew Rowe, 53, was trying to collect his mail when he was struck by Mr. Stapp.

"They were non-life-threatening," Deputy Kernaghan said of the men's injuries. "They were just beat up and banged up."

The deputy said he is unsure what caused the wreck because Mr. Stapp, 18, has no memory of the incident.

"Witnesses said he was not speeding prior to the first impact (with the mailbox)," Deputy Kernaghan said. "We don't know if the accelerator got hung up or if he put his foot on the accelerator, but that's when he sped up and went out of control."

Mr. Stapp was cited for failure to maintain lane.

I do know his father is a fabulous person. Quit being so negative about this young man. I am sure he was checked out medically after the incident especailly as he can't remember it. This is quite possibly a decent kid who had an accident.

People are being negative,

People are being negative, because when something like this happens in south Augusta and its a black person driving people assume the worse. I am white and I even see the difference in how people respond on here. Someone of his age should not be driving a Mercedes, and if someone is known to have seizures he might need restrictions on his license. I know that sounds mean, but until they can determine how to medicate him to prevent the seizures its for his own best good and the good of others.

usnvet HOW DO YOU KNOW HE WASN'T TESTED AT THE HOSPITAL? Give it up! imdstuf...... ummmm that comment about an 18 year old driving a Mercedes is a stupid comment! Who cares what kind of car he is driving? I agree that, if he has seizures, he should have restrictions on his driving.

Well, if this house goes on

Well, if this house goes on the market then I would buy it in a minute. I mean this house is already "car driven into" proof. What would be the odds of another car driving into it again?

To all the ones whining that

To all the ones whining that he was only charged with failure to maintain lane, what else do you want him charged with? The tampering with mailboxes charge Justis4 mentioned is not a traffic violation, it is a criminal charge when someone intentionally damages a mailbox. There is no other applicable charge, according to witnesses, his driving wasnt reckless and according to the article, it is not likely he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was charged accordingly, and it is sufficient to bring him to court to answer for his actions and address restitution. This kid had a car accident, plain and simple, like thousands of kids (and adults) before him. Your calling for his head on a platter is beyond ridiculous.

This kid should not be

This kid should not be driving a car, period! If he has some medical condition that causes him to blackout when he is behind the wheel, then he should not be driving. Blind people don't drive cars either.

imdstuf saying that an 18

imdstuf saying that an 18 year old should not be driving a Mercedes is one of the flat out dumbest thing I've heard; this is still America, not China. Good call WHIM, hit it directly on the head. Its ignorant about how some people on here think Columbia County is a joke compared to Richmond, lets take look at the school systems and the crime rate. Its also funny how many people on here think there is a discrepancy if he would have been poor rather than rich; get over yourselves, stop taking it out on the kid.

Ahem, stupid sheep. Please

Ahem, stupid sheep. Please go away and never come back. On the one hand, you'll believe everything you read if you agree with the article. Yet find one aspect of it you don't like and now you're all baying like sheep about it being sanitized. Freaks.

The difference is simple.. if

The difference is simple.. if this happened in Richmond County, the driver would have been likely high on meth or running from police after robbing a convenience store.

Did any of you people ever

Did any of you people ever drive your parents car when you were teenagers? Yes, he was driving his father's Mercedes, an OLDER Mercedes. Since when is this a crime? I know this family, they are wonderful and caring people. I also know that an accident with injuries means you have to have your blood checked. Do you know this WASN'T done? No, you don't. A witness said he wasn't speeding when all of this started so something out of his control must have happened. Give the boy a break. Anyone can have a medical emergency hit them without warning, if that is indeed what happened. Anyone can have an accident.
