List of schools in cheating scandal still secret

The larger list of Georgia elementary schools suspected of cheating on state tests won't be known for at least a few more days because an official with the information took it with her to a wedding.

On Wednesday, Kathleen Mathers, the executive director of the Governor's Office of Student Achievement, released the partial results of an investigation into cheating on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests. She named four schools with the most egregious cheating and indicated about 20 are suspected to have cheated.

The full list is known only to Ms. Mathers and the center at the University of Georgia contracted to conduct the investigation.

On Friday, a spokeswoman said Ms. Mathers was at a wedding and had taken a computer drive with that information. Repeated requests were made Thursday and Friday for the list.

No one else at Ms. Mathers' office had the list, and UGA wouldn't release it without her office's permission.

The investigation found such overwhelming evidence of cheating that the State Board of Education tossed out four schools' fifth- grade 2008 retest scores Thursday: Deerwood Academy of Atlanta Public Schools, Atherton Elementary of DeKalb County, Parklane Elementary of Fulton County and Burroughs-Molette Elementary of Glynn County.
