Minor managers can put on major shows

In a three-hour, 20-minute Augusta GreenJackets game two weeks ago at Lake Olmstead Stadium, Rome Braves manager Randy Ingle owned two minutes of it.

The 51-year old manager, angered at a possible home run ruled foul in the top of the 10th inning, stormed onto the field, ranted at home plate umpire Erik Hill, tossed his helmet, relocated third base 45 feet into fair territory and offered Hill his glasses in a disruption that earned him an ejection.

The 3,819 fans in attendance were entertained by the tirade enough to give Ingle a standing ovation. When video reached the Internet, first on augustachronicle.com where it was viewed 7,000 times within a 12-hour period, the incident became an online sensation.

ESPN's SportsCenter ran with the video as part of its Top 10 Plays segment twice last week.

"You wouldn't have believed how many people called me the night (it aired on ESPN)," Ingle told the Rome News-Tribune . "I eventually had to cut off my phone that night -- and I never do that."

The video also reached Kurt Kemp, the Atlanta Braves' director of player development, who said he reviewed the tape and decided that Ingle would not receive any type of suspension or fine from the organization.

"It's a judgement call and a matter of defending your players vs. going too far," Kemp said. "We would (suspend or fine a manager) in a case where we felt like it was inappropriate. Randy reacted in a manner that I don't think was inappropriate to the extent that we would do anything from our standpoint."

Ingle's rant drew comparisons to another Braves minor league manager, Phillip Wellman, whose 2007 tirade in a Double-A game also found a national spotlight. The video of Wellman's tirade has been viewed almost 450,000 times on YouTube.

To add to the organization's reputation, Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox tops the list of Major League Baseball manager ejections with 143 over his career. Tony La Russa ranks second among active managers with 78, according to a report in Forbes magazine.

"We expect our managers to be leaders and to stand up for their players," Kemp said. "Now, our manager (Cox) has managed a long time, and sometimes records come because of longevity."

Kemp also said Wellman did cross the line with his 2007 tirade, a performance that earned him a reported three-game suspension from the organization.

Minor league managers in other organizations have also had their time in the spotlight.

Two years ago, Asheville Tourists manager Joe Mikulik performed a head-first slide into second base, threw bats onto the field and made a mud pie at home plate with a bottle of water.

Kash Beauchamp, manager of the independent Wichita Wingnuts in 2008, put on a protest that included waving his shoe, then his armpit in the face of a home plate umpire.

Such incidents might be fun for the fans.

It's another story for minor league umpires.

"You stand there and try to keep the best body language you can," said Doug Vines, part of the two-man umpiring crew who called the GreenJackets' most recent homestand. "Nine times out of 10 (the manager) is just out there to put on a show."

Shea Gipson, Vines' partner for the season, said it's important for an umpire to maintain composure when a manager doesn't.

"There is no training for when something like that happens on the field," Gipson said. "All you can do is stand there and let the manager make his point. He's the one that looks like the mad man, not the umpire."
