Larry Laughlin has participated in United Way's Loaned Professional program for five years.
"It's a good opportunity for anyone who wants to go professionally and learn more about the needs of their community," said the retired Savannah River Site worker. "As a loaned professional, you get more out of it than you may think. You put in 110 percent, but you get a lot more in return. There are just so many advantages to participating for the person, for the United Way and for the community."
Under the program, workers from businesses and organizations work 12 weeks on the United Way's campaign. Employers continue to pay the employees' salary and benefits, said Rina Powell, the senior director of resource development.
"It's a great way for employers to give back to the community," she said. "They loan us their employees, who help us by going out to companies in the area and work with them on their campaigns, take people on tours of our agencies, and talk about United Way and its programs."
Companies may sign up employees through July 31. The program lasts from Aug. 17 through Nov. 6.
Companies that aren't able to loan an employee can be a financial sponsor by contributing $7,500 instead, Ms. Powell said.
"Financial sponsors enable us to hire someone to represent that company as a loaned professional during the campaign," she said.
Mr. Laughlin said he would urge people to participate in the program.
"So many times, you are out there and wonder what you can do to help," he said. "This is a case where one person can help a lot of people and a lot of agencies. It's a chance to put something back into the community and be confident that what you're doing is making a positive impact on lives throughout the area."
