Fourth at the fort

The Fort Gordon Independence Day celebration will be from 5 to 11 p.m. today at Barton Field.

The event will feature a performance by the U.S. Army Signal Corps Band, a children's carnival and pony rides, games, food vendors and fireworks.

Shelter holiday hours

The CSRA Humane Society, 425 Wood St., will be closed Saturday for Independence Day.

Regular hours for adoptions are 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

Orientation for new volunteers is held at 9 a.m. the first and third Saturdays of each month.

Heat shelter

To help people escape the Independence Day heat, Fort Discovery, 1 Seventh St., will be offer reduced admission from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Having a blast

The RiverBlast July 4th Celebration will be held from noon to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Augusta Common and Riverwalk.

The event will include arts and crafts, dancing, music and a fireworks display.

Movies for teens

A Teen Movie Series will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays in July at the Augusta-Richmond County Public Library, 902 Greene St.

The first movie to be shown will be American Teen , rated PG-13, on Monday.

Moonlight walk

A Family Fun Full Moon will be held from 9 to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park, 1858 Lock and Dam Road.

Join Southeastern Natural Sciences Academy staff and search for animals such as owls, frogs, beavers and bats at night.

The hike will cover about 21/2 miles. The cost is $5 for academy members and $8 for nonmembers. Registration is required by Monday.

Dining with Holmes

The play Sherlock Holmes and the West End Horror will be performed July 17, 18, 24, 25, 30, 31, and Aug. 1, at the Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre, Building 32100, Third Avenue.

Dinner is served at 7 p.m., and the show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $37 for civilians; $35 for ages 65 and older, Department of the Army civilians and active duty E7 and above; $28 for active duty E6 and below; and $22 for the show only.
