Chamber earns top-10 ranking

The Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce has been ranked in the top 10 nationally for membership retention in 2008.

The American Chamber of Commerce Executives awarded the local chamber with a Membership Achievement Award for its accomplishments in the $900,001 to $2 million total revenue category, according to a letter from the organization.

The local chamber completed a survey and was selected from 354 chambers nationwide, said Sue Parr, the president of the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce.

4 Georgia banks told to get houses in order

ATLANTA --- The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. has ordered four banks in Georgia to raise capital, clear bad loans off the books and improve lending practices.

The banks are Community Bank & Trust in Cornelia; Gordon Bank in Gordon; Crescent Bank and Trust in Jasper; and Farmers & Merchants Bank in Lakeland.

In the past year, 14 Georgia banks have been shut down by regulators, more than in any other state.

S. Carolinians may pay too much for insurance

COLUMBIA --- A new report says consumers in South Carolina could be paying too much for insurance.

The Legislative Audit Council report says the Department of Insurance needs to do a better job of documenting reasons for approving rate increases. The report also says many of the files reviewed were missing paperwork needed to prove why the increases were necessary.

State Insurance Director Scott Richardson said parts of the report are misleading and the documents it mentioned are not required by state law.

The audit was requested two years ago amid concerns over increasing rates for workers' compensation insurance and coastal property insurance.
