Tuesday's closing of Savannah River College leaves 10 students in limbo, the school's president confirmed.
The junior college -- once known as Kerr Business College -- opened more than 25 years ago in Augusta and offered diplomas and certificates in business, medical billing, Internet technology and other programs, President Darryl Kerr said. The financial pressure of running a school with limited tuition payments took its toll on the career college, he said.
"Financially the college cannot continue like this, just like any other business could not," Mr. Kerr said in an e-mail.
"This leaves about 10 students who we'll work with to transfer to another school."
Last week, Mr. Kerr informed the Accreditation Council for Independent Colleges and Schools that Savannah River College would be closing, said Anthony Bieda, the director of regulatory affairs for the council. The accreditation council, based in Washington, oversees more than 760 schools nationally.
Mr. Kerr said the school has not enrolled a new student since last fall. Any student who is graduating this summer will receive credentials, Mr. Kerr said. Former students will continue to receive transcripts.
