GreenJackets knock around Legends

Eric Stolp threw his longest outing of the season and Andy D'Alessio and Johnny Monell extended their hitting streaks to eight games in the Augusta GreenJackets' 7-2 win over the Lexington Legends on Tuesday night.

After a pair of losses in Rome, the GreenJackets started a four-game home stand at Lake Olmstead Stadium, where they've gone 19-4 since May 7. The team pounded out 11 hits to stretch its home streak of 10 or more hits in a game to nine.

"Early in the year we struggled at home, so this is good to see," manager Dave Machemer said. "I don't know why or what it is about playing at home, but I'm glad it's happening."

Stolp, a relief pitcher until injuries and roster moves brought him into the starting rotation for the month of June, allowed two earned runs on six hits over six innings in his third start this season. He struck out two, walked two and got some help from a strong defensive performance led by shortstop Ehire Adrianza.

"It was unreal. Hits were turning into outs," Stolp said. "I thought I gave up a leadoff single (in the second inning) up the middle, but Adrianza made an unbelievable play, and it makes it a whole different game."

Adrianza added a 2 for 4 night and was one of four GreenJackets to turn in a multi-hit game.

Trailing 2-1 through five innings, Augusta strung together four consecutive hits to take a 5-2 lead.

Monell came through with the first big hit on a two-RBI double to left field. Vladimir Frias followed with a run-scoring triple, and Dom Duggan later drove in the first of his three RBI with a two-out bunt for a single.

"Johnny had the big hit that inning," Machemer said. "That started it."

Augusta reliever Chance Corgan, out for more than a month with an injured finger on his throwing hand, returned to action and threw two innings of one-hit ball. He retired six of seven batters and gave way to Edwin Quirarte, who threw a perfect ninth inning to seal the victory.

Lexington starter Ross Seaton (6-7) was pulled in the sixth and got the loss after giving up three earned runs on six hits and two walks. Lexington led 2-1 at the time, but he left two runners on base who scored when Monell doubled off Henry Villar.
