BREWERS: Prospect Jeremy Jeffress was suspended for 100 games after his third violation of baseball's minor league program for a drug of abuse.

The 21-year-old right-hander was suspended for 50 games on Aug. 30, 2007. He was Milwaukee's top pick in the 2006 amateur draft and the 16th selection overall.

CARDINALS: Infielder and former Clemson star Khalil Greene was placed on the 15-day disabled list for the second time with social anxiety disorder.

The Cardinals purchased the contract of right-hander Clayton Mortensen , 24, from Triple-A Memphis.

METS: Center fielder Carlos Beltran was in Colorado to get a second opinion on his ailing right knee.

ASTROS: Right-handed pitcher Brandon Backe was placed on waivers. The 31-year-old, who has no record with a 10.38 ERA in 13 innings this season, rejected an assignment to Triple-A Round Rock.

CUBS: Outfielder Sam Fuld was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to replace infielder Aaron Miles , who went on the 15-day disabled list with a hyperextended right elbow.
