Ease up on the governor 's affair

  • Follow Letters

I will be the bad guy (girl) to say this. All of this talk about Gov. Mark Sanford's affair is getting quite ridiculous.

I wrote him off when he allowed so many people to lose their jobs by not accepting stimulus funds, but I now think that he had firsthand knowledge of how government funds are wasted. He offered to pay back the money for his trips to Argentina, but we can only imagine how much money was wasted on local, state and federally funded trips. He gave everyone reason to look at his spending under a microscope. So where were the watchdogs a year ago when he spent more than $8,000 on one trip? I'm sure that should have raised some red flags in the state audit department.

As far as his ploy for media attention, do we not force it on politicians? We vote them into public service positions, and we treat them as if they are servants to our constant need for gossip. We want all personal information to become public. Even though his publicist could have prepared a speech, Sanford spoke from his heart.

For those of you so quick to pass judgment, the feelings he has for this other woman -- and the true anguish he is demonstrating over the pain he has caused his family -- should show you he really is a decent man with a heart. He is human.

He made a huge mistake, but we all know that for a man in his position to truly give his heart (not just his unmentionables) to someone other than his wife, there must have been something already amiss with their marriage. If his heart was truly with his wife, his mistress would've never been able to break that connection; it would have been only physical attraction.

If he was such a terrible guy, he would not be struggling so much with how much he's hurt his family and friends. He wouldn't care.

Jennifer Bachner, Evans

Ms. Bachner, Sanford SAYS

Ms. Bachner, Sanford SAYS he cares. He ACTS like he cares. Do you know what Bacon said about Honesty with the rise in popularity of the theatre? And that was a rhetorical question.

Why is it a disgrace when

Why is it a disgrace when Sanford has an affair but when Clinton commits perjury, lying about his affair the nation reacts with "he was just lying about sex.........everybody does it." ========== Just asking.

This is "very damaging

This is "very damaging stuff," "I think it would be much better for the country and for him personally (to resign)... I come from the business side, If you had a chairman or president in the business world facing these allegations, he'd be gone."The issue of lying is probably the biggest harm, if you will, to the system of Democratic government, representatives government, because it undermines trust. And if you undermine trust in our system, you undermine everything." Sanford's comments about Clinton. Clinton was wrong, but you can't criticize Clinton without doing the same for Sanford.

Tigger The Tiger.... It is a disgrace because Sanford was one of the Congressman that voted to impeach Bill Clinton, but he is asking to be forgiven today. Isn't it a bit hypocritical?

Sanford forsook the trust of

Sanford forsook the trust of his wife, family, supporters that voted for him, people of the state he governed, and his party. His affair wasn't just his. In his position, his responsibility should have come before personal gratification. He should have left his office and marriage before spinning off into a relationship which made a lie of everything he said he stood for. No action he takes now will be satisfactory.

Sanford's anguish is because

Sanford's anguish is because he got caught. He paid the $8,000. back because he got caught. He ruined his relationship with his wife, family and friends, and possibly ruined his future in politics. All of this for a few minutes of joy!!

TECH, I agree that Sanford

TECH, I agree that Sanford should step down. Howver, your comparison to him with Clinton is flawed. First, Clinton lied under oath...a crime called perjury. I'm sure you've heard of it. Second, Clinton's lying [filtered word] stayed in power because his buddies in congress decided to ignore his crime and keep him there. Let me say again, Sanford should step down, but nobody has proven that he's broken any law, unlike Clinton.

I've always liked Sanford. He

I've always liked Sanford. He seemed like a decent guy who stood up for what he believed in. But his most recent public "apology" had him comparing himself to David and his well-known failings. But that struck me as egotistical and an attempt to rationalize his behavior. It would have been fine if a friend had compared him to David - but you do not do that yourself. When you are caught in such a position - just shut up and take your lumps. Sanford is showing who he really is without the facade of the politician, which is all he apparently was.

I thought using tax payers money for personal use was a crime? I forgot, this is a Republican, it is considered a momentary lapse of judgement. I love when you hypocrites use Clinton for comparison, but cry like the whiners you are when Bush name come up. The article is about Sanford.

southernguy08.... The

southernguy08.... The comparison is on point, your judgment is flawed!! Clinton did lie under oath about a piece of tail, but Telling your staff you are out hiking when in fact you have left the country with no executive in charge is quite a bit worst. I am still needing one of you brilliant Conservatives to explain why Sanford is not far worst than Clinton because he actually voted to impeach Clinton and now claims a lapse in judgment for himself. I have always taken the position that Conservatives are the country's best hypocrits. They want homosexual sex with little boys, they cheat on their wives, and are willing to run others out of office for immoral behavior even while they are engaged in the same reckless conduct themselves. Sanford is a hypocrit, but I expect this from most Conservatives anyway... Sanford will stay in office just like Ben Harbin. You Conservatives are simply liars at best and should never try to lecture anyone about morals. From teen pregnancy, to adultry, to homosexuality, to bribery... I really don't get the morality message and would prefer churchs stop adopting Conservatives as true Christians.. Their behavior requires some separation from them.

CPARKER, when you get your liberal head out of your [filtered word], please tell me what law Sanford broke. Clinton wasn't impeached for "a piece of tail." He was impeached for committing perjury, lying under oath. As I've said numerous times, Sanford should resign. But, legally, he's done nothing wrong. And all politicians, liberal and conservative, including our current president, sell themselves as family men/women with traditional values. Now, please tell me how you segued from this matter to lashing out at Conservatives about lying when you've got your share of them in your own camp. Edwards, Blageovich, Burris, Frank, Kennedy, and the icing on the cake, Clinton. Sorry, CPARKER, but Bill Clinton will always be known as the biggest lying scumbag who ever sat in the president's seat. Nice try though. Here's a lollipop for your effort.

Bachner, what does his position and giving his heart to his wife have to do with anything? If he was not the gov would it make a difference? If there was something amisss in their marriage and his heart wasn't with her, he should have left. The job of a mistress is to keep the physical side satisfied. Hope she wants used goods now. Before you hold him to a mightier-than-thou level, remember that he did this for an entire year without taking responsibility. He gets caught once and becomes an apoligetic, pathetic crybaby.

Embezzlement is the act of

Embezzlement is the act of dishonestly appropriating or secreting assets, usually financial in nature, by one or more individuals to whom such assets have been entrusted. He took tax payers money for this trip, and he won't to pay it back. Why don't we let all the bank robbers out of jail, that is if they can pay the money back.

If another state employee would have left his of her job for five days. They would not have a job. Same punisment for the same action

The point about the $8000

The point about the $8000 being re-paid was that it should have been "found" before he admitted to the affair & put his whole life under a microscope.

Techlover, I come from the Business side as well, which makes me wonder why you don't realize how much corruption and lies the business world covers up. What's funny about this entire "debate" is how people think that Gov. Sanford is the only person in a position of power that has ever deceived someone..when he resigns, do you think the next governor will be totally honest about everything?

Mr. Spinks, if you don't know the difference between someone just SAYING something and actually SPEAKING from their heart, maybe it's not Sanford that has issues.

Sanford disappeared BEFORE he got caught, has anyone ever been in a situation where you needed to walk away to get your bearings? None of us know what he went to see his mistress for, we all just assume that it was to 'carry on' the affair. Maybe it was to end it?
Thankyou ladyjanegrey
Prolifer..what does his position and giving his heart to his wife have to do with anything? Um..all the talk about honesty and morals in order to be Gov. you figure that out?

WILLISTONTOWNSC You are a

WILLISTONTOWNSC You are a prime example of a selfish hypocrite, saying you have "THE RIGHT" to judge people you do not know. Someone like you who defines a person based on their political agenda cannot possibly see people for who they truly are. Maybe you need to take a look at yourself before you start thinking you have rights that only GOD has priviledge to. How about you SHOVE or surround YOURSELF in a community that is nothing like yours and learn to stop labeling people. If you feel good every morning when you wake up with a "label" than that's your problem.

Jennifer12345, I know his political positions -- and none of them are good. Like I say before, the cons want to force their set of beliefs on everyone else in this nation. If there is anyone who is being selfish here, it is YOU. WILLISTON, this is in regard to your 1:32 post. It is MY RIGHT to judge liberal hypocrites like you HARSHLY because it is LIBS who change the rules to suit them. Case in point? How about when dirtbag Clinton lied under oath and libs like you defended him by saying, "Everyone lies about sex. It doesn't affect his ability to lead." Now, you're wanting Sanford removed, although he didn't lie under oath. As for the last sentence in this post, I'm hardly surprised. You have about as much class as sense, which isn't much. But, your idiocy is still good for laughs. Keep on posting, please!
