A Georgia Southern University student and a camper attending an event at the school have both tested positive for the novel influenza A H1N1 virus, better known as swine flu, the school and a health district announced Wednesday. The cases aren't related, and both patients are recovering.
"They did not have direct contact," said Roger Naylor, the public information officer for the Southeast Health District in Waycross, Ga. He could not provide the patients' ages.
The Georgia Southern student, who lived off campus and wasn't attending classes, became sick within the past week and went to the school's infirmary, Mr. Naylor said.
He was treated with antiviral medication and is already back on his feet and out of the range where he would be infectious, Mr. Naylor said.
"He's doing well," he said.
The other case involved a camper at Georgia Boys State who became ill and tested positive after returning home, the school said in a news release. The event for rising high school seniors is sponsored by the American Legion, said Betsy Nolen, Georgia Southern's assistant director of communications.
The camper was hospitalized at one point, Mr. Naylor said, but the school said he is now recovering at home.
The state had 59 confirmed cases of swine flu as of Monday, which doesn't include the two announced Wednesday and a case at Fort Gordon announced earlier, said Belen Moran, the state health risk communicator for the Georgia Division of Public Health.
That cases would show up in southeast Georgia was not a surprise, Mr. Naylor said.
"We know it's out there," he said. "We were expecting it."
