Don't try to fix what isn't broken

  • Follow Letters

The U.S. health care system has problems but it is not broken. President Obama is creating a national health care insurance company to fix what isn't broken.

Supposedly this will not lead to nationalized health care and we will not have socialized medicine. These are President Obama's promises.

The cost estimates for President Obama's health care plan range from $630 billion to $1.5 trillion. This cost is on top of the massive deficit spending President Obama and the Democrats in Congress have already authorized.

The Democrats and Obama have created a terrible record in five short months! President Obama ordered the closing of Guantanamo without a plan. This has resulted in the U.S. paying Palau $200 million to take just 17 detainees. Bermuda has taken four. No other country has stepped forward, and the Democrats are refusing to fund the closure.

The economic stimulus package is another Democratic debacle. The stimulus package was rushed through with no understanding of what was in the bill. The American people were told if this massive spending was not passed, unemployment would reach 8 percent. It was crisis! Our unemployment is now at 9.4 percent and increasing, and only 5 percent of the stimulus money has been spent.

The Democrats are also responsible for the General Motors bailout. The Democrats have spent $50 billion and the taxpayers now own 60 percent of GM. President Obama appointed a 31-year-old law school dropout named Brian Deese to represent the taxpayers' interests! Mr. Deese has no work experience to speak of.

Can you put the health and welfare of you and your family in the hands of people who have demonstrated such incompetence? Please write your congressman about President Obama's national health care plans and the waste it will create.

David G. Brown, Augusta

Actually, Mr. Brown, our health care system is broken beyond repair. We have the 37th best health care system in the world. We CAN do BETTER than that! And Obama will make sure we do better than that!

willistontownsc

If you, like Mr. David Brown, is completely satisfied with 37th best health care, then by all means do nothing. If you want our health care system to be the best in the world, then back Obama on this issue.

While the American "health care" system can use some improvement, the total socialization of the industry, as is being pushed by Obama, is not the answer. America won't be improved by being a European clone. This experiment has gone horribly wrong in the past 5 months. Let's cripple this "president" in 2010 and get him in a safe place, (out of office), in 2012.

a system that charges a healthy person that does not visit the doctor the same premium as an unhealthy person that has the doctor on speed dial is in dire need of attention. i do not like to subsidize other's health care, just as i do not like to subsidize other people's lives.

This is another CRISIS as labeled by the libs. Like emanuel says 'we can't let a good crisis go to waste'. What a bunch of scare-mongers prezbho and his clan are. Everything has become a crisis whether it is or not. Talk about this becoming the nanny country. Scare them enough and they will let us take care of them from cradle to grave must be what they have decided in their morning meetings.

CC,PT,TR, you all point out some excellent issues with this(ONE PAYER) socialization plan, but the users and weak minded only hear that Obama is gonna give them FREE Medical. That is as far as they think about the whole situation. They have no cares about who pays for it, or what service it provides. And why do people care of where we rate in the world for medical treatments. We all know the truth. Does anyone know people that leave the US and go to Africa, England, or anywhere else in the world for their lifesaving treatments? Even the rich muslims come to the US for the best treatments money can buy. We dont need to fix what isn't broke. Obama is systematically eliminating all private businesses, by eliminating any competion.

Just what we need, another socialized solution subsidized with tax dollars. Maybe we should just all sign our checks over to the feds and let them deliver every service we need. I for one have heath insurance through my office and have been quite satified with it. The coverage was more than suficient to get us through multiple births, regular docters visits, two angioplasties and other emergency room visits. I don't feel that health care needs to be changed. I think this is just another boondogle to redistribute wealth.

We have the most advanced health care in the world with our superior technologies and medical schools. The problem is that in a capitalistic system there will always be some who don't place enough importance on health insurance or are incapable of earning enough to pay for it. Wise up, buy insurance and work harder to pay for it yourself. You shouldn't expect others (the government) to pay your bills.

convertedsoutherner

I know a working couple that make very good money. They CHOOSE to not have health insurance. When they need care, they go to the emergency room and are treated for all their ills. Some people are wise and responsible individuals - some aren't.

Mr. Brown, I am not sure how you can say the current system is not failing. Private insurers have had decades to figure out how to deliver a healthcare system that reflects America's values: quality care for all citizens at the best possible price. That have FAILED! Rates are expected to go up 9% next year. I have never dealt with a more hardened bureaucracy than the health insurers. Australia and Germany have successful programs that offer public/private insurance options. Through politics, money, and lobbying, the private insurance companies are manipulating the market forces so it is time for drastic measures.

The US has 37th best health care, and yet some don't have a problem with it. Responsiblity has ZIP to do with this. So keep that out of it.

Georgiais1

I have had the best of healthcare for the past forty years. My wife and I both work and we pay no deductables or co-pay. I don't want to change. Doesn't everyone have this opportunity?
Take care of elderly and physically disabled I understand. Everyone else should be responsible enough to "man up"

convertedsoutherner

What percent need to get free health care and what percent are responsible individuals? Why are we changing an entire system for those that CHOOSE to be irresponsible?

willistontownsc

That is you, Georgiais#1. And you are one of just 3% of this nation that can make such a claim. The other 97%, most of which are hard-working responsible humans, have fifth-rate healthcare that is even more shoddy than China. If there is anyone who should be more responsible, it is the insurance companies and the HMOs.

I refuse to be envious of Our president and what he is trying to do for all Americans. We have not had a president ever in the history of this country who is so dedicated to his job. Its like GW was never president. A special thanks to FOX news for its 24/7 coverage of this great president. We also have a lovely first family who are very proud of America. There is no embarrasing partying from the children of the first family. We should all be very proud of the religious right family values that this lovely first family brings to the white house. It is really a beautiful day in the neighborhood. I will be coming in your neighborhood soon urging you to get out the vote and organize your neighborhood to insure Mr. President Obama's re-election. We were so proud to see the helicopter lift off with GW aboard never to be heard from again. I guess his wife is busy writing his book. Has anyone heard from Rumsfeld. Look like cheney has finally gone underground. Dick morris (no neck) has written another book. Is it true that Dick Morris has a little sugar in his blood? He just talk like he does, maybe? HELLO! HELLO!

I don't want a health care system like the failed Canadian and English system!!

mad_max

I take issue with it being said that we have the 37th best healtcare system. Seems funny to me that people come here for their treatment from some countries that supposedly are higher rated than the US. The criteria for rating us the 37th are questionable. We actually have the best healthcare, but we are rated lower because some percentage of the population does not have as great of an access to that healthcare. The countries that have attempted to cure the access problem have lowered the availability of access and certain treatments for everyone. The Obama/Democrat proposal will not make healthcare better for those of us who have insurance. It will make it worse for us and better for a small percentage. Those of us who have healthcare will pay more and settle for less. Sorry, for me that is not the answer. Is that selfish? Yes it is I guess. But I am not willing to work harder and pay more taxes and yet have my family get WORSE healthcare than they have now. You want better healthcare. It's called a JOB and you take some of the proceeds from that JOB and buy INSURANCE. Obama's govenment plan will put private insurance companies out of business and that is not acceptable.

We could improve the health care system considerably with a little tort reform.

bdittle

Georgias#1 "Doesn't everyone have this opportunity?" ...the answer is no. If you are an entrepreneur or self-employed and have a pre-existing condition, you will be hard pressed to get that opportunity. If you are struggling at a benefit-less job and barely living above the poverty line, you do not have that opportunity. Unless you want everyone to work for established companies that carry insurance, this system does not work. The GOP has told me that the entrepreneur is the backbone of this country... let's figure out a way to give them health care too.

corgimom

The bottom line is that no country has unlimited resources of anything. The government is going to go into the health care business, and by necessity is going to have to limit care. You either limit your pool or limit your resources.

bdittle

corgimom, as a country, we have to decide if quality health care is a right or a privilege. Let's pray on that moral issue.

convertedsoutherner

Haven't you heard that prezbho and clan have been talking about health care rationing? I'll bet the government leeches (congress) won't be included in the rationing. When guvment takes control - watch out.

I'm so sick of this Obama bull crap interfering with private industry and banking. Look at what has happened to interest rates on savings accounts. Since he dumped so much money into the banking system the interest rates dropped out on saving accounts because banks got the money so cheaply from the feds. Everytime these dorks in our goverment mettle into private industry they make the situation worse. I can only predict the same for health care, sure intention maybe good but they never concider the consequences.

We are going to spend trillions of dollars to treat just 10% of the population while screwing health care up that is good for the other 90%, does this make any sense to you?

Remember Obama's ad, "McCain is going to tax your health care benefits"! Well I voted for McCain and I am going to get my health care benefits taxed...

dinohntr

Our health care system may be broken and needs fixing but the government is not the answer. The government runs a railroad (AMTRAK) and it loses money every year. The government run cafeteria in Washington DC has had financial shortfalls - Congress had to appropriate extra funds to keep it operating. This country survived for more than two hundred years without government interference in health care. Some one once said "The government that governs least, governs best." Just say NO to government run health care.
