Champion: Lucas Glover closed with a 3-over 73 to finish with a 4-under 276 total for his first major championship.
Second place: Phil Mickelson (70), David Duval (71) and Ricky Barnes (76) tied for second at 278.
Tiger's spot: Defending champion Tiger Woods closed with a 69 and finished at even-par 280, tied for sixth with Soren Hansen (69) and Hunter Mahan (72). This was Woods' seventh top 10 finish in 15 Open starts.
Long road: Glover became the first U.S. Open champion to go through U.S. sectional qualifying since Steve Jones in 1996.
Noteworthy: This was Mickelson's record fifth runner-up finish in an Open, breaking a tie with Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. All but one of Mickelson's seconds have come in the state of New York: Bethpage Black, 2002 and 2009; Shinnecock Hills, 2004; and Winged Foot, 2006. He was also second at Pinehurst, N.C., in 1999.
Quoteworthy: "It was a test of patience, that's for sure. It was just heart today." - Glover, as he held the champion's silver trophy.
Key stat: Five players finished 72 holes under par, four more than in 2002 when Tiger Woods won the first Open played at Bethpage Black with a 3-under 277 total.
Next year: The 2010 Open will be held at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California, June 14-20. It will be the fifth time Pebble Beach has hosted the Open: 1972 (Jack Nicklaus); 1982 (Tom Watson); 1992 (Tom Kite); 2000 (Tiger Woods).
