A life is a life no matter who takes it

The late Mrs. Barbara Thurmond fought many years to do something about black on black crime.

On Wednesday, June 17, I shared in the last rites of parents and their family whose daughter was gunned down. It is a tragedy for any parent or family member to experience the loss of their child or for their child to take a life.

The U.S. Justice Department reports that nearly half of the people murdered in the U.S. each year are blacks. More than nine out of ten of those murdered victims were killed by other blacks, and three out of four were slain with a gun.

If we are to change, transformation must begin in the home, where parents (adults), are to teach their children wrong from right.

How do you think a black parent feels when you run to the street in protest when someone else kills blacks but when we kill each other very little is said or done?

I must conclude a life is a life no matter who takes it.

Reverand Fryer, thank you for writing this letter. I pray that your message will be received and embraced.

More leaders in the community need to spend every waking moment stressing the advantage of being responsible and accepting responsibility. The current attitude must change for any improvement to take place.

We should all be outraged by every murder in this country, to include abortion. We as a society have become so desensitized that life no longer means anything. We as a nation should be outraged at the killer of Dr. Tiller just as much as we should be outraged at the Dr. for killing all those babies. We should be outraged at the gunman at the holocaust museum, but there are some that sympathize with him. We should be just as outraged at the muslim who killed the soldier at the recruiting station just as much as we once were outraged at the terrorists on 9/11. I say just as much as we once were because America seems to forget tragedies such as these as time goes on.

Personal responsiblity is indeed the key. Government interference has destroyed far too many families and the destruction of the family unit has caused our society to deteriorate.

fred1217

Rev. Fryer, using your same argument or "logic", we should NOT have been outraged at the local Sheriff for shoplifting at Walmart. He reportedly only stole a pack of gum and a few other things. Why did he have to resign??? We're not outraged by kids that steal gum. They usually are held until their rich parents come to pick them up from the store's security office. Why hold this Law Enforcement Officer to a higher standard just because he's sworn to protect and serve. Chewing Gum is Chewing Gum right?

dawgfan

alot of these so called parents rev fryer could care less about teaching their childeren right from wrong they are to busy doing drugs and having babies they cant and wont take care of

DonH

Someone should write an article titled, "Crime Knows No Color." Most of today's local crime comes from families with two parents working outside the home (no time for the kids), or poorly parented families that don't take the time to teach their children right from wrong.

LBenedict

How about...all crime is bad and must stop? But no; we first have to examine the melanin level of the victim and of the perp, and THEN we can render an opinion on the crime.

carcraft

An increase in single parent homes (ie mom raising the kids) doubled the crime rate, 90% change in crime rates are related to change in single parent homes. This is from the analysis of studies Entitled "Children of Divorce:rapist and other criminals" go to http://Marriagedebate.com/pdf/imapp,crimefamstructure.pdf. We pay women to have children with out having fathers for the children the "fathers" live off of babies mommy money or some such. The more babies a guy has the more money he can collect. "Fathers.com the consequences of fatherlesness" also points out that single parent families have higher incidence of crime and drug abuse ets. So DonH you are wrong! Young women need to stop getting pregnant and tell the fellows if they want a little put a ring on it.

Thank you Rev Fryer for and excellent letter!

As always, Rev. Fryer you are on point. It is sad that we protest when someone of another race takes the life of an African American and nothing is said when an African American takes the life of another African American. It is my prayer that God will comfofrt and strengthen the family and give us the wisdom on how to deal with the senseless violence that is sweeping through our community.

"More than nine out of ten of those murdered victims were killed by other blacks,"- why doesn't the NAACP fight this? This is genocide, and it's done to themselves. But you don't hear the NAACP said a word about this.

Rev. Fryer, great letter. Please ask your congregants and others to pray that our society become like God -- blind to the color of skin. Please pray that our society will demand a solution to such crimes, a solution that is quite workable. EDUCATE ALL OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE. I mean ALL of them. Until we demand and achieve a level of education, crime will grow and the USA will become a third world country.

I know I will get hammered on this one, but right now we must pick our battles. Abortion is murder, but it is legal, and right now we cannot change that. However there are more laws that are coming that are going to devastate the traditional values and freedoms that we all enjoy. Personal responsibility is one of those values that is being diluted by socialized governmental programs and this nations pop culture philosophy, there is no difference between right or wrong. The progressive media and politicians keep playing the abortion and race card to keep people divided. We must do what our founding fathers did, put aside their differences. We need to do the same and go back to the principles of freedom our nation was founded upon.

I understand his concern, his heart is in the right place, but black on black crime is not ignored. There is just so much of it that many have become numbed to it. Also consider many black communities don't read or watch the "white" media, because they don't trust it, so might simply not be aware of the murders. On the other hand, white on black crime is sensationalized all over the place, partly because it is relatively rare and the media usually immediately asks, "was it a hate crime?" But it isn't politically correct to mention the frequency of black on white crime. People would go into a panic at those numbers. Also, it apparently isn't possible for black on white murders to be considered a hate crime in states that carry that law. I've never heard of that even being considered. I suppose courts can read these black, white and whatevers minds and determine who hated who or what group and why, because I sure don't have that talent. There shouldn't be any distinction. As far as I'm concerned, it's either self-defense or hate crime, so why put sentences of greater or lesser value on degrees of hate. There are too many murders, no matter what the races involved are.

Unfortunately this will go on deaf ears as the good Rev will likely be chastized and castigated much as Bill Cosby for his comments on the black community. LBenedict good posit.

Posted by fred1217 on Sun Jun 21, 2009 7:42 AM...and just what the hell has this to do with people killing each other and black on black killings the Rev was addressing? Not even a weak excuse, fred the clueless.

The problem is drugs, our leaders have failed to control the borders and the drug smuggling. The Mexicans are so brave they are growing pot and making meth right here in the US. Its well known they have a sophisticated smuggling and trafficking logistics program.

Fiat_Lux

A surprisingly good collection of comments on this letter, some even really good. Way to go, guys.

I really feel that the black churches are doing an excellent job with their parishioners. The ones most in need of help are probably not attending church or church functions. The main thing is that those whose behavior is less than desirable are not stigmatized like they used to be. Just note the Justin Elmore situation.

christie

Amen DonH, black on black, lol. It would make me racist if i posted stop white on white crime. A reverend should want all crimes stopped no matter the color. I will pray for this rev to want good in all people. and also for the comments left by the racist ones. Amen.
I know i will get hate comments so please answer me this, Can we get some help to stop the white on white crimes please? No, because the blacks will call racist for that comment. Grow up people and get over it. The names Christie.

KSL

Christie, I can understand his concern because the black on black crime is so prevalent. It is admirable to wish all crime to stop. But that can't be accomplished because people are human. Just what are we supposed to grow up and get over?

apex24

Amen Rev Fryer. Where are you Justus4, cparker, RCR and Niko?? Rev. Fryer saying the same thing I've been trying to get through you're thick sculls. With Rev. Fryer being black who are you going to call a racist this time.

Asitisinaug

Personal responsibility and acountability would solve the majority fo the problems within the black community but they are never even so much as mentioned by the NAACP, Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton or the majority of so called black leaders who are speaking for "their people". Frankly, we are all Americans, all have the same rights and responsibilities as well as opportunities. We have a 42 year old black school superintendent int he CSRA who grew up in the projects and wasn't afforded many opportunities but was successful due to his parents making him take personal responsibility and this is but one of millions of examples in this country of minorities acheiving success. People like Justus4, the NAACP and others who simply look to be enabled by the government, think they are owed something, always have the "woe is me attitude" and NEVER condem the actions of blacks who kill, rape, murder, etc. are sending the wrong message and continue to hold many black people back. It is amazing how many cultures and ethniticities are in the US and have as a whole succeeded very well but yet so many blacks continue to sit back as if owed something and this is condoned by their leaders.

corgimom

Southernguy, so what you're saying is that before abortion was legal, before 1973, things were better and there wasn't a lot of murders because people respected life. Do you think people didn't get abortions before 1973? Do you realize how absurd your reasoning is? Why didn't killings end before 1973?

christie

Well said Asitisinaug. I could not have stated it any better.
