Augusta stuck its hand in the cookie jar and came out with more than 200 jobs.
Kellogg's, which makes cookies and snack packs in south Augusta, will expand its baking operations this fall, creating the possibility for 260 more jobs.
Kellogg's will spend $7.5 million on equipment to produce new cookie brands, the company announced Thursday.
The Development Authority of Richmond County passed an inducement resolution Thursday to begin the process of issuing $30 million in bonds to fund the plant's projects. Plans for the additional $22.5 million in spending were not revealed Thursday because the Augusta plant has not received final corporate approval, said Keith Downing, the plant's director.
The Augusta bakery will be making new cookie products for Kashi, Keebler and the Girl Scouts, he said, in addition to Mother's brand, which is popular on the West Coast.
Kellogg's is also moving equipment from its Charlotte, N.C., facility to Augusta in September to make snack pack sizes.
"Since most of that product comes to Augusta before it is distributed, they'll transfer that operation to this location ... and save some money," Mr. Downing said.
That relocation will open 220 jobs in Augusta, although about 20 people will be relocating from Charlotte, he said.
Mr. Downing said the plant at 1550 Marvin Griffin Road is already screening applicants to fill 150 positions that will be needed in advance of the new production.
"They could have gone to a lot of bakeries around the country because they've got a lot of plants. Kellogg's has the faith in the workers and the facility to do this. Broken cookies don't make profits," said Terry Elam, development authority chairman. "Two hundred jobs at this point, that's significant."
The plant will be adding 40 jobs once the additional cookie production ramps up later this year.
"If everything comes to fruition, we will be up toward 760-employee range," Mr. Downing said.
The company will be back before the authority in July when the paperwork for the bond sale is ready for approval.
The authority approved a $51 million bond sale for expansions at the plant in 2005.
