The Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia hope to have 100,000 community service hours by the national organization's 100th anniversary in March 2012.
They set the goal in May 2008.
"We really wanted to do this because we want to be sure that our Scouts know, and that the community knows, that we are much more than just cookies," said Lindsey Rivers, the communications specialist. "We are about community service and helping the people in our community."
So far, the Scouts have accumulated 3,200 community hours.
To help reach their goal, several community-service projects have been incorporated into many of the local organization's activities, Ms. Rivers said.
For example, in July participants in the Traveling Troop program will make pillowcases for children being treated at the Medical College of Georgia Children's Medical Center.
Scouts are urged to do community service on their own and to report their hours to be counted toward the goal.
"By now, every Girl Scout is aware of the goal and is excited about doing their part," Ms. Rivers said. "One hundred thousand service hours sounds like a lot, but we are confident that our girls can do this."
The Scouts need community support, she added.
"They are going to play an important role in helping us reach our goal," she said. "If anyone has any ideas about community service projects that we can do, we would love to hear from them."
