Georgia Tech had already wooed B.J. Bostic enough to convince him to play football for the school, which is why the Jefferson County senior was pleasantly surprised to still feel wanted when he walked into its locker room Saturday.
Hanging at one of the lockers was a Georgia Tech jersey, outfitted with his No. 7.
"It felt great; it looked real nice on me," said Bostic, who was at Georgia Tech for a football camp.
Bostic, who had more than 20 scholarship offers and is ranked by one publication as one of the top 100 recruits in the country, said he plans to graduate early and enroll at Georgia Tech this winter so he can get a head start working out with the team's other defensive players.
He wanted to make his decision early because the Yellow Jackets coaches told him they will sign only 12 players this season. Including Bostic, the team already has commitments from seven players, all from Georgia, according to Rivals.com.
"Tech is flat tickled," Jefferson County coach J.B. Arnold said. "They got a heck of a recruit."
Bostic (5-foot-11, 175) passed and rushed for more than 1,300 yards last season at quarterback for the Warriors, but he insisted his future is on defense. He said that of all the schools recruiting him -- his scholarship offers included West Virginia, Maryland, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt -- Georgia Tech was the team that best understood his needs. He said he might play a little more wide receiver and kick returner this season but will remain at quarterback.
"I got all the athletic tools, I just need to get used to the position," he said. "Not too many wide receivers my size get drafted. More corners my size get drafted."
Bostic said he will complete four classes at Jefferson County this fall so he can graduate early. Of the demands on his time in addition to football this fall, he said, "I'm up to the challenge."
Bostic will join his first cousin, recent Jefferson County graduate and defensive lineman Chris Crenshaw, at Georgia Tech. Bostic said Crenshaw was leaving for Georgia Tech today to prepare for the upcoming season.
Jefferson County, which Arnold said has placed at least one player into a Division I school for the past eight seasons, opens its season Aug. 28 at home against Laney.
