Heat dominates meet at Laney

It was hard not to notice the heat on the final day of the Georgia AAU District Track and Field Meet, on the track and anywhere around Laney Memorial Stadium.

While temperatures were nearing triple digits Sunday, The Heat Track Club was finishing off its third consecutive overall state title. The Marietta-based team ended four days of dominance with 795 points, besting Gazelle Track Club, from Kennesaw, who finished with 631.

"We've had a good week," said Blaine Williams, head coach of The Heat. "I'm glad to see that our kids trained hard. I'm proud of them."

The Heat had more than 30 first-place finishes during the course of the four-day meet. They finished first in the male division and wound up second in the female division.

Williams said a big reason for his team's success has been the performance of his daughter, Kendell Williams.

She won four hurdles gold medals in the youth girls division, the 14-year-old age group. She was also honored on Saturday for what she accomplished during last year's national championships, where she won three titles and set the national record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.42.

The Augusta Flyers Track Club, competing on its home track, placed 17th overall with 105 points. The girls finished in 15th and the boys in 27th. Recent Westside graduate and Flyers member, Gerald Taylor, won first place in the javelin with a personal best of 161 feet on Thursday. It was a 30-foot improvement on his previous long throw.

"I was surprised. I didn't think I threw it that far," Taylor said.

Taylor finished second in the decathlon and later teamed with John Duncan, Markus-Dion Tremble and Shaquille Wheeler for a silver-medal winning performance in the 4x800-meter relay.

Augusta's Jocelyn Hartshorn, competing in her first state meet, placed first in the girls sub-midget division -- 11-year-old age group -- high jump.

"I think we did fairly well," said club president and coach George Taylor. "We had a lot of kids who were competing in a major event for the first time and we picked up on a few things that we need to improve on."

Regardless of placement in state meet, all participants qualify to return to Laney for the Area 6 National Qualifier on June 25-28.

"We'll find out who's made the improvements when we come back here in two weeks," George Taylor said.
