SPLOST package responsible, needed

  • Follow Letters

Fred Russell tackled the daunting task of reducing over $600 million in requests from governmental and outside agencies to prepare a very fair special purpose local option sales tax package now costing $184 million.

So where will the money come from? Continuation of the penny sales tax. Every time any person spends a dollar in Richmond County, a penny will be added to this fund. Instead of the Richmond County property owner footing the entire bill for the much-needed projects, financing will be spread over buyers who choose to make purchases in Augusta.

The pennies that fund this package will purchase new police cars and fire trucks to replace the ones that are wearing out, provide tree pruning and removal of older trees, upgrade sewer systems, enhance our libraries, repair and maintain our roads and bridges, upgrade traffic engineering, and make needed repairs to our parks and recreation facilities. These projects will generate jobs.

In addition, outside agencies, which have made requests that will enhance our quality of life, will be charged the task of raising 25 percent in matching funds. These projects include the kick-start to restoring the Miller Theatre, and providing improvements to the Imperial Theatre. Also, enhancements made to the canal, as well as the Augusta Museum of History, and Lucy C. Laney Museum, will generate more taxed sales from visitors and tourists. More jobs.

I urge you to go to www.augustaga.gov to learn more.

How is this splost going to
Unpublished

How is this splost going to generate jobs? It is like what the
president and congress have said while spending billions, GM
and Chrysler will lose over 50,000 jobs instead of generating jobs. These spendocrats need to put some proof on the table as unemployment continues to rise! No thanks, I'm voting NO to
taxes. For those that think your taxes are not going up, wafch out for the gas tax, sugar tax, excise tax and the death tax,
just to name a few. These are hidden taxes that most do not even consider, but you will see everything will be going up. How
much is a can of campbell's soup now, check it out! You cut off
tax breaks to businesses, it will be made up by the consumers!

According to the SPLOST

According to the SPLOST Project List, Item G-2, $1,200,000 is proposed for The Downtown Developement Authority. They have spent $40,000 or more of previously approved SPLOST funds on the pie-in-the-sky trolley study. How much has been wasted by other entities on similar studies. How much more will they and others waste if the proposed SPLOST is approved? You can absolutely count on a lot of money being wasted on these ding-bat studies if the new SPLOST is approved. The vote choice is up to you. For myself, I'm going to vote NO!

They're going to raise property taxes anyway. Those items sound good but the last SPLOST went millions over budget. "I urge you to go to www.augusta.gov to learn more." lol Tricia, you better HOPE nobody does that!

Amen!! Vote NO and keep

Amen!! Vote NO and keep voting NO until serveral things happen. 1) The commission gets their act together and starts working for US...all of US. 2) The SPLOST list gets cut down to ONLY NEEDED PROJECTS THAT BENEFIT EVERYONE. Roads, bridges, parks, etc. NO money for any PRIVATE entity. ONLY COUNTY PROJECTS. 3) No SPLOST money, and NO BOND money for that matter, for any ambiguous project labled as "REVITALIZATION". That puts our money up to be spent on undefined purpose at the discretion of.....who knows. If they want to fix up Betty Beard's slum properties, make them put it in writing up front to the voter.
