ATLANTA - The Atlanta Braves have their highest draft pick in 18 years on Tuesday, and director of scouting Roy Clark says that hasn't made it easier for him to predict the player the team will select.
The Braves have the No. 7 pick in the amateur draft, the team's highest draft position since taking Mike Kelly No. 2 overall in 1991 - one year after Chipper Jones was the No. 1 pick.
San Diego State right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg is widely expected to be the top pick Tuesday. Clark says there is no consensus on what will happen next, so he has had to prepare seven different draft scenarios.
"There's a lot of uncertainty after No. 1," Clark said Monday.
He says most of his scenarios have the Braves drafting a pitcher first.
"There might be one position player that's in our mix, but the rest are arms," Clark said.
Clark said right-handed pitcher Zack Wheeler of East Paulding High in Dallas, Ga., is "going to be right in that area" of the No. 7 pick.
Another home-state talent who is projected as a high first-round pick is outfielder Donavan Tate of Cartersville High. Tate is the son of former University of Georgia running back Lars Tate, who played three years in the NFL for Tampa Bay and Chicago.
"We want the best available guy," Clark said. "We've got some Georgia guys in the mix. We'll see."
Before this year, the Braves' highest recent draft pick was outfielder Jason Heyward at No. 14 in 2007. Heyward, from Henry County High south of Atlanta, is hitting .295 with nine homers at Class A Myrtle Beach and is rated the team's top prospect among position players.
"We'd like to have someone just like him at seven," Clark said before adding he doesn't see another prospect like Heyward in this year's pool of talent.
Clark said it will be important that the team knows it will be able to sign the player it drafts, so he said he and his staff have been talking to the representatives of players they may select.
"We're working the phones today," he said. "The agents are all calling."
After the No. 7 pick, the Braves have a long wait before their next draft pick, No. 87 overall in the third round. They lost their second-round pick to the Los Angeles Dodgers as compensation for signing free agent pitcher Derek Lowe.
