Some of you have begun that long road of summer travels and are sharing your postcards.

Dot Farr and Jean Story, of Thomson, write: "Cumberland Island is a beautiful national seashore and lots of interesting shops and things to see in St. Marys. We are having fun and getting wet sometimes. Lots of rain."

Rick and Donna Kruzner are in Seattle, as are Bill and Nancy Dean, of Augusta. "Part of a large Augusta group headed for Alaska," write the latter.

Sam and Jeanne Corley, of Augusta, are having a great time cruising the inside passage of Alaska. Also on an Alaskan cruise are Roy and Marlene Rearden, of Augusta, who say they "went crab fishing (sorta.)"

Thomas Kraak, of Aiken, sends a card from Pahrump, Nev., which he says was the locale for an Odd Couple TV episode once.

George and Ann Farmer, of North Augusta, send a card from the Grand Hotel on Macinac Island, "the place to visit if you want to escape the heat of the CSRA. Cool breezes from Lake Huron are almost constant."

Judy and Jim White, of Graniteville, are in Rockford, Ill., and visiting Galena -- home of Ulysses S. Grant. They say I should visit.

Perry Sr. , Linda , Dana and Emma Allen are visiting son Perry in Williamsburg, Va.

June , Courtney , Vanessa and Ronald , of Hephzibah, went to Tybee Island for their annual "Hallelujah: School's out" beach trip.

"We love everything about Tybee," they write, "especially Spanky's hamburgers, the big, beautiful beach and the stop in Savannah."

Frequent travelers Sandra and Shirley Johnson send greetings from North Carolina.

SUMMER READING: Birthday greetings today to Lou Brissie , of North Augusta. If you're looking for a summer book, you might try the new one about this former major league baseball pitcher. The Corporal Was a Pitcher was written by Ira Berkow , a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The New York Times.

It tells the story of how Mr. Brissie overcame horrendous battle injuries from World War II to pitch, and pitch well, in the major leagues.
