AIKEN --- Two suspects in a slaying in Kentucky who were captured last week in Aiken County have waived extradition and will be returned to their home state, Strom Thurmond Jr., solicitor for the 2nd Judicial Circuit, said Wednesday.
Dustin Lee Mackie, 23, and Angela Michelle Mackie, 38, were arrested after Paducah, Ky., police tracked the couple's cell phone signal to a site in North Augusta and then contacted local authorities.
The couple, who had married just days after becoming wanted, have been charged in the May 21 shooting death of Jon Michael Crouch, 38, of Paducah.
According to police, the incident occurred as the Mackies, of Kevil, Ky., drove next to Mr. Crouch's vehicle. After a confrontation at a stop sign, police say, the two vehicles drove about a half-block when Mr. Mackie, 23, is believed to have fired into Mr. Crouch's vehicle.
Mr. Crouch was struck in the head, causing his car to speed down a hill, hit a utility pole and flip over. Mr. Crouch died the next day.
Mr. Thurmond said that for security reasons the exact time of when the couple will be returned to Kentucky isn't being released, but he said the process will occur quicker now that the two have waived extradition.
