Three charged in fatal shooting at restaurant

Three people were arrested Sunday and charged in a fatal shooting Saturday night.

According to a Richmond County jail committal, Susan Elaine Inglett, 24, of the 200 block of Barrow Drive, and Nicholson Rydell Williams, 18, of the 200 block of Memory Drive, were arrested Sunday morning in connection with the fatal shooting of the owner of the House of Cheung King of Wing restaurant at 2331 Milledgeville Road. Ms. Inglett and Mr. Williams were charged with criminal attempt armed robbery and murder.

Michael Eugene Williams, 20, turned himself in at the Richmond County Law Enforcement Center about 9 p.m. Sunday, according to a jailer. He had been sought on charges of murder, criminal attempt armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

The shooting occurred during an attempted armed robbery about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Richmond County Deputy Coroner Johnny McDonald said.

The restaurant owner, Jone Yin Cheung, 51, of Martinez, was shot at least once in the forehead , Mr. McDonald said. He was pronounced dead at the Medical College of Georgia Trauma Center at 9:11 p.m.

Drowning victim had on heavy pants, boots

An Augusta teenager who drowned in the Savannah River on Saturday was wearing a jacket, heavy camouflage pants and military boots when he jumped into the water, Richmond County Deputy Coroner Johnny McDonald said Sunday.

Mr. McDonald said Stephen Fishel, 16, and a friend jumped into the water on the Georgia side of the river and were swimming out toward a sandbar called Goat Island when Stephen turned and began to head back in the opposite direction. He made it as far as the weed line when he went under about 1:30 p.m., Mr. McDonald said.

Stephen’s body was recovered by the Richmond County Fire Department and Dive Team hours later. He was pronounced dead at 5:33 p.m. The body was found at a depth of about 8 feet, Mr. McDonald said.

The body has been sent to the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta for an autopsy this morning.

Suspect sought after Publix worker robbed

A Publix employee was the victim of an armed robbery on Old Barton Chapel Road early Saturday.

According to a Richmond County sheriff’s report, the robbery occurred when the employee was exiting her vehicle. A man approached, pointed a gun at her and ordered her to get on the ground. The man struck the woman on her head, stomach, arms and back with his fist. He fled with a black handbag containing $4,800, according to the report.

The suspect is described as black, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing about 200 pounds. He was wearing a black ski mask, black clothing and was carrying a small handgun.

Gasoline prices rise 6 cents since last week

Gasoline prices in the Augusta area were up about 6 cents a gallon Sunday from the week before, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report.

The price of a gallon of regular gas was $2.29, up from $2.23 on May 24.

Nationally, the price of a gallon of regular gas was $2.50, up from $2.42.

In Georgia, it was up 6 cents, from $2.29 a gallon to $2.35 a gallon. In South Carolina, motorists were paying $2.31 a gallon, up from $2.26 the week before.

$880,000 raised for children’s center

The 24th Annual Children’s Miracle Network Celebration raised $880,000 Sunday for the Medical College of Georgia Children’s Medical Center.

Although that was less than last year’s $925,000, “given the economy, I would say that’s pretty good,” said Denise Parrish, the media relations manager for MCG Health Inc., which operates the Children’s Medical Center.

Traffic update

Richmond County

- There will be lane closures on both sides of Bobby Jones Expressway between Scott Nixon Memorial Drive and Wheeler Road from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. today until Friday. There will also be lane closures on both sides of I-20 between Davis and Wheeler Roads during the same time.

- Wheeler Road lanes between Perimeter Parkway and Agerton Lane will be closed from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. today until Friday.

- A portion of westbound Marks Church Road at Jamaica Road will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today until Friday. Detours will be in place.

- There will be a traffic shift on I-20 the eastbound ramp to eastbound Bobby Jones Expressway today until Friday.

- There will be a traffic shift on the Wheeler Road ramp to eastbound Bobby Jones Expressway from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today until Friday.
