RED SOX: John Smoltz had his longest and strongest outing of the season, working five innings in a rehab start for the Single-A Greenville Drive. Smoltz gave up a run on four hits against the Charleston RiverDogs, but he closed by retiring his final seven batters, including the final three on strikeouts.
It was Smoltz's third minor-league rehab appearance in 11 days as he continues recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He says he'll rejoin the Red Sox in Detroit this week, then wait for an expected start at Triple-A Pawtucket.
RAYS: Manager Joe Maddon said injured closer Troy Percival (right shoulder) plans to rehab his shoulder but that retirement remains a possibility.
INDIANS: All-Star outfielder Grady Sizemore was placed on the 15-day DL with left elbow inflammation, and the team called up utilityman Chris Gimenez from Triple-A Columbus. Gimenez, who can catch, served as backup to Kelly Shoppach with Victor Martinez ailing. Martinez is out with a bruised left knee.
TWINS: Left-hander Francisco Liriano will remain in the rotation, though his status might be reviewed after a couple more starts, manager Rod Gardenhire said.
ROYALS: Catcher John Buck (back) was hospitalized and placed on the 15-day DL and catcher Brayan Pena was recalled from Triple-A Omaha.
