Do you prefer secession? Think again

Secession? Really?

I hate to break it to all you hard-core Southerners, but not only is the suggestion of secession idiotic, it's treasonous as well.

Setting aside the fact that you'd be starting a second Civil War, let's just say the federal government lets Georgia leave the union. You think your taxes are high now? Wait until Georgia has to pay for its own military. Have you looked into how much one F-16 costs? Have you thought about funding an army or navy? Oh, maybe one of you guys has a spare aircraft carrier in your carport.

Say bye-bye to Social Security, Medicare, unemployment insurance, federal disaster relief and any federal money for roads, schools, prisons, etc. All Georgia's military bases will have to close. Say goodbye to all the money they bring into the state. You'll probably need to get some startup money; maybe France will help out. Oh, that's right, you guys hate those pansies. Maybe China will lend a hand or Cuba; they're close by.

And so long, tourism. Who wants to go to some unstable startup nation whose government could be toppled by pretty much any other nation with a military?

Instability isn't attractive for business, either. Who wants their factory taken over or stripped down to the studs?

Maybe a few other states will join in the fun. Texas is toying with the secession idea. They're kind of expensive though; they've received $3.45 billion (that's with a "b") in federal disaster money over the past eight years.

Maybe you guys could have a bake sale after the next hurricane. The other Southern states aren't much cheaper either; they tend to have a lot of tornadoes, floods and hurricanes. Warm up those ovens -- if there is another Category 5 hurricane, you'll need to sell a whole lot of muffins!

If you think so little of us "hard-core SOUTHERNERS", just what are you doing here??? If you are being forced to stay, please say so and I'll be among the first to help you relocate. Not liking us is just, well, idiotic. By the way, if states had to be re-admitted to the union after the war that means they were not part of it during the war which means it was not a civil war, but, a war of northern aggression. Secession would not make us traitors, but, it would make us able to JOIN with other wise states that exercise their right to succeed.

patriciathomas

Well, I guess some LTE has to be the dumbest of the year. I think this is a top contender. (way too much CNN)

wallerstein

Secession: cutting off the nose to spite the face.

confederate american

jewel pullen-you under estimate the will of southern people.also in the early1900 texas had a hurricane that killed thousands and destroyed just about everything, guess what they rebuilt eveything back without one dime of government money.you need to take your yankee [filtered word] back to where ever you came from.

americafirst

Your description of an independent Georgia sounds a lot like what the U.S. is becoming under Obama.

colcamp1

Jewel Pullen, you had to have known what type of response that you would get from this crowd? I say more power to them. Let them do it. I for one would not miss a single one of them. They are stuck in time and no amount of reasoning or common sense discussion will help. They tell people to leave. Hell they are the ones complaining, why don't they leave.

patriciathomas

I agree with colcamp. Let all of the really smart Dems take their high taxes and subsidy voters to on side of the country and let the really dumb conservatives take their way of life to the other side of the country and separate. Different governments, different economies. I think it's a great plan.

Grasshopper

I don't understand why Northerners constantly move down here enjoy lower taxes, cost of living, and warmer weather. Then turn around and consistently degrade the south. I think its a conspiracy by the, wealthy of the Northern states, to send all their rejects down south.

colcamp1

So people in the South are rejects or only the ones that came from up North? PT, I say give you Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi and any other that wish to join you. I promise you will not be missed. You can elect Palin as President and she can have Cheney as her V.P. and Bush as Secretary of Defense.

HotFoot

colcamp1, I agree completely. And btw, if you folks don't understand how a NATION works, people often move to other regions to obtain employment in their fields. There are plenty of Southerners "up North" who went there for their careers. In the rest of the country (in my experience), people don't feel this weird, overwhelming fealty to their state and region. They're Americans, not Southerners. The LTE makes excellent points which PT would rather slam by association with CNN (for some inexplicable reason) than address. Anyway, the first response down here to criticism of certain attitudes (which aren't shared by everyone, thank goodness) is an invitation to leave. That's Southern hospitality for ya.

HotFoot

Oh, and Milton? If you think MCG gets all their physicians and researchers from the South, you're sadly mistaken. Maybe those "rejects" should go back where they came from, hmmmm?

Grasshopper

Hotfoot I was being sarcastic, I could careless who my neighbors are as long as they are law abiding citizens. It is the Northerners who are the ones complaining, I guess it is their culture.

patriciathomas

Wow colcamp, that would be a GREAT political leadership. I don't understand why you switched from referring to groups to referring to land masses though. Many of the residents in the area you list would gladly gravitate to the really smart Dem part of the country because of the loss of social services. Those dumb ole conservatives would have to deal with all of the achievers flocking to their area.

patriciathomas

Oh yeah, HotFoot. It's easy to tell the really loyal Americans by the hyphenated prefix they use.

HotFoot

I understand, Milton, but I wonder if you actually hear people who've moved from other regions criticize the South. I mean, person-to-person. There are many, many positive things about this region, and I'm sure you'll hear as much about that as anything negative. No, the problem is that this comment board seems to animate those with the most virulent Southern exceptionalism...and then the folks from elsewhere are baited to respond. I'd put my satisfaction level at about 80%. The thing is, I thought we were all Americans.

HotFoot

PT, I'm an unhypenated person and you disagree with every last thing I write. I'm sure you think I'm not a loyal American....no, wait, you'll probably just say I'm "confused" and "uninformed" and "the product of a governmente school". Does that about nail it for you?

willistontownsc

Best letter this year that appeared in the AC. Thanks, Ms. Pullen for telling it like it is.

patriciathomas

Wow HotFoot, I've never heard a duck call itself a duck before. Thank you.

patriciathomas

willi = consistent

HotFoot

Quack off, PT.

Milton I don't think these folks are from the north. I believe they are southerners that have managed to get some schooling beyond the 3d grade. Of course most southerners only need a 3d grade edumacation a pickem-up truck, and a fixed mobile house to seceed.

Grasshopper

Hotfoot I worked with a company for three years based out of Rochester NY, and now I work for a company based out of Maine. I have my experience with people from the north and the transplants. Person to Person there are few complaints. The thing I find funny is when I travel outside the south some ignorant people actually talk slower to me like I can't understand them, its like when people go to a Chinese restaurant and order their food in English, with a Chinese accent,.Just tell them the number people they can't understand Chinaenglish.

willistontownsc

confederate, Ms. Pullen is just as Southern as you (and me) are. At least the Yankees have an appreciation for America.

Grasshopper

Willi you are not a southerner you were just born here!

Eyore

Why would anyone believe that taxes would go UP after a secession? Where do you think the Federal Government gets its money? From the people! How much does one F16 cost? Well how many of them does it take to defend 1/50th of the number of people and land? Besides....Each state DOES have their own military....it's called the national guard and the militia. Yet another reason our founding fathers were wise enough to put in that second amendment.

HotFoot

Eyore, that's NATIONAL Guard, not State Guard.

bone

too late for secession now; best just to keep one's head down and soldier on. most of jewel's "points" are too stupid to comment on, anyway.

Eyore

HotFoot.....who finances, mans and is in charge of the NATIONAL Guard?

Riverman1

Ms. Pullen lives in Grovetown. Trailer? Nontoxic one?

Eyore

If a state were to secede, what on earth makes you think they wouldn't take their National Guard with them? After secession, they are no longer bound by the Federal Government, so even if Big O tells the Guard to follow him, it would be like Putin telling our Army to follow him.....it's a different nation, different C in C.
