WESTMINSTER BASKS IN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Breck Ardrey was seeing stars, and when the Westminster senior regained focus, she wanted to uppercut the trainer hovering over her.

Ardrey, injured for a prolonged moment in Westminster's state girls soccer championship game Saturday against First Presbyterian Day, said she needed help remembering bits and pieces of the game, which Westminster won in a penalty-kick shootout.

She had plenty of help Wednesday night. That's when more than 100 people gathered at the school in an official capacity to do something they will likely repeat for years: detail the night the school captured its first state title in a girls sport. Westminster opened in 1972 and has had a girls soccer team since 1994.

"Girl power is alive and well at Westminster," headmaster Steve O'Neil said after the team presented him with the championship trophy. Speaking into a microphone in front of the crowd, O'Neil said: "Honestly, girls, this is pioneering."

Westminster tied First Presbyterian Day 2-2 through 110 minutes of play in the Georgia Independent School Association Class AAA final. First Presbyterian Day, a Macon school, entered the game 22-0 and had only been scored on four times. Westminster won the shootout 4-3, setting off a delirious celebration that lasted late into the evening. Parents said they didn't leave the field until after midnight. The game ended shortly before 11 p.m

"And we probably got back around 2 (a.m.)," said Ed Smith, whose twin daughters Kelly and Cara, start at goalie and forward, respectively.

Offered the choice of winning before the shootout -- the Wildcats led 2-1 late in overtime after sophomore Annie Speese blistered a shot into the goal from 30 yards out with her non-dominant right foot -- players said they preferred the shootout for the moments that followed the marathon game.

"It was the fastest 110 minutes of my life," Freace said. "The farther we took it, the more pressure (First Presbyterian Day) was going to be under."

Ardrey, an all-state defender carried off the field by Freace following a collision during overtime, returned to the game for the final minutes of overtime.

"Nothing would have kept me away," she said. "This is honestly going to be my No. 1 memory from high school, playing with these girls."

Westminster might have won the first of what could be a string of championships. It loses only two starters off this year's team.

"They are going to be difficult to replace, but if we have other people step up, we can win it all again," Speese said.
