As the academic year winds down, the Augusta-area cultural arts scene is going strong, with a calendar full of events.

The Morris Museum of Art , 1 10th St., will screen the PBS documentary Fatal Flood at 2 p.m. Sunday. The film depicts the historical events that inspired John Steuart Curry's 1940 painting, Hoover and the Flood , one of the signature pieces in the Morris collection. Docent Jane Ellis will discuss the artist and his work following the screening.

The Morris will open an exhibit titled Stories to Tell, Memories to Keep: Folk Art in the South, on June 4, beginning with a free open house from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Steve Slotin, owner of one of the most successful folk art auction houses in America, will talk about collecting folk art at 6:30 p.m.

The Morris also will have a family program featuring Mr. Bob, the Singing Storyteller, with a mix of folk tales and songs at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 7. Other related programs are planned during the summer. See www.themorris.org.

June 4 will be First Thursday at Midtown Market and Art Gallery, 2113 Kings Way, with music from 5 to 9 p.m. Featured artists include Frances Weltch Force, Bea Kuhlke, Randy Lambeth, Melissa Sellers, Elizabeth Moretz-Britt, Ann deLorge, Keil Alderson and Laurie Adams. Call (706) 922-5000.

At the Aiken Center for the Arts , the Aiken Artist Guild Juried Show continues in the main galleries through June 26, as does the Michael Pearson exhibit in the Wyatt Gallery. The arts center is also offering two art camp sessions in July for adults. See www.aikencenterfor thearts.org.

At the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art , the exhibit of abstract sculptures by South Carolina ceramic artist Virginia Scotchie closes on Friday. Her work incorporates colorful glazes and metallic finishes into organic shapes.

Friday is also the entry deadline for the 29th annual juried fine art competition, A Sense of Place, to be staged in September at the Gertrude Herbert. Bernice Steinbaum, of Miami, is the juror. Call (706) 722-5495 or see www.ghia.org.

The Art Factory has received the Kaleidoscope Award from the Georgia Assembly of Community Arts Agencies for Outstanding Community Programming in the Arts. Executive Director Cindy O'Brien accepted the award, which recognized the Art Factory's Art @ School program, which provides artist residencies in schools.

Louise Keith Claussen is Morris Communications Co.'s corporate art manager, former arts editor, former art museum director and advocate of Augusta's cultural arts community.
