Memorial Day arrests double number in '08

A Memorial Day weekend crackdown on traffic violations in Richmond County netted 128 speeders, 18 drunk drivers and more than twice as many arrests as a year ago, according to Sgt. Pete Lamb of the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies issued 92 speeding tickets Monday as of 7 p.m., Sgt. Lamb said.

Overall, speeding citations fell from 170 in 2008 to 128. Drivers ticketed for not wearing seat belts dropped from 45 to 19.

Deputies served two felony and six misdemeanor arrest warrants, according to Sgt. Lamb. A total of 37 people were arrested.

Farmer pinned, killed by overturned tractor

A farmer was killed in Emanuel County when his tractor overturned Sunday.

According to a news release from the Emanuel County Sheriff's Office, Capers Phillips, of Lyons, Ga., was killed mid-afternoon. There was no sign of foul play. Witnesses said Mr. Phillips had been working on his pond dam for several weekends.

When he did not come home after dark, relatives said they started looking for him. They eventually found Mr. Phillips at the base of the pond dam, pinned beneath the tractor.

The speed trap that was set up on Bobby Jones was a joke when you have at least 7 police cars and two fools on the overpass trying to catch someone speeding was a waste of tax payer money. They should have been trying to stop someone from breaking into someone home or stopping someone from being robbed. And if you or one of your love ones was robbed or had there home broke into on Monday, then you can think your locate PD, for not doing there job. I just think that it was an over kill to have that many officers trying to catch people speeding. When there is so many other things going on in the county, they could have been patrolling your or my neighborhood trying to help keep them safe.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!JUST A THOUGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Juantez, you must be one of the idiots that speeds through there causing the RCSD to invoke such "overkill" as you like to put it. Also, you may want to proof read next time before hitting the post button. JUST A THOUGHT!!!!!!!!

BTW, RCSD, Bravo!!!!!!! You guys do an amazing job!

I see where Lidie Clements has passed away. He was the one who had his truck repossessed - the repossession gone bad where the neighbor got ran over by the wrecker driver and the neighbor died. Hope Mr. Clements death wasn't a result of the repo also. Condolences to both families.

well you fool (sxf1973) I dont speed if you must know . so who is the idiots, idiots

gee, juantez, little sensitive, are we? There's a division in the RCSO called Traffic Enforcement, there's also a patrol division, robbery division, homicide division, etc. They each have their little niche in the crimes that are committed. When a special operation is done, it doesn't detract from the regular operations, usually. I'm glad to see speeding enforcement being done on the Bobby Jones Raceway. Gee, I said all that & didn't call anyone an idiot, see how easy it is?

OBTW, a "speed trap" is, by definition, just that, a trap. There are no "speed traps" on Bobby Jones. A reasonable reduction in speed (i.e. construction zones) is not a speed trap. Neither is it a trap when the speed goes from 55 to 45 to 35 in a reasonable distance. I could be wrong, but I think the distance is about 100 yards per 10 mph. Usually, just taking your foot off the gas pedal will suffice to bring your speed down, with the exception of one place in N Georgia where the speed drops from 55 to 45 on a hill/cliff. Someone wasn't thinking on that stretch of road. It's a straight away, 1/4 mile away, it's uphill again. Going to 45 at the Bottom would allow BOTH directions to slow without standing on the brakes (or gas for the ones going uphill into 55 MPH).

juantez, for you information, I was one of those Deputies in your so called speed trap. We are assigned to the traffic division.. There are divisions assigned to certain types of crime.. Narcotics, Property Crimes, Homicide, Sex Crimes, and the road patrol was handling all the calls that come in from the dispatcher. We are traffic enforcement.. I'm sorry you were not smart enough to pay attention to the signs that are posted called "speed limit signs." And I'm sure I'll see you in court. And KK, your 6:34 post was right on..

One more thing for juantez, if you were doing the speed limit, then you would have been able to count, there were 10 of us out there on Bobby Jones to include the two on the overpass... You might want to do some research on the things you try to complain about, so you don't sound like a [filtered word] to the ones of us that know what's going on.

Keep up the good work, DUSTINS803!
