Sanford sets a fine political example

  • Follow Letters

South Carolina is fortunate to have one of the most outstanding governors in the country. Mark Sanford not only has character and intelligence, but is truly a man of tremendous insight.

In a day of rock-star politicians, Mark Sanford is a man with common sense. In today's world when lying is referred as "misspeaking" and sexual crimes are listed as "inappropriate behavior," it`s no wonder the truth is so rare.

When most South Carolina politicians cannot resist the worn-out slogan "I just want to help the poor (children, widows, homeless, etc.)," their true meaning is: "Please re-elect me; I need your taxes to buy these poor people`s attention and continue in office. While preaching to the poor, they are telling taxpayers how they intend to cut taxes.

You will not hear this demagoguery from Gov. Sanford. For this reason most South Carolina politicians -- Democrats and Republicans -- hate his guts.

Just think if we could ever get someone elected to every office in this state that had Sanford's type of courage and honesty.

Exactly, Jet Beckum. Gov. Sanford is willing to make the tough decisions that have the best interests of South Carolina in mind. Every criticism of him has to do with his unwillingness to shackle his state with increased, long term indebtedness. The state congress he is dueling with is led by the type of people that represent what is wrong with politicians today. Voters need to educate themselves (not with CNN and NPR) so they can make intelligent choices next election or S.C. will be rushing down that socialist trail with no chance of recovery. Only Gov. Sanford has stopped us from being there already.

I don't hate Gov. Sanford's guts because I want the same old same old. I hate Sanford's guts because he doesn't care one iota about our children, he doesn't care one iota about the poor, he doesn't care one iota about the homeless and he doesn't care one iota about those who are hurting under the Bush policies that Sanford himself supported. I applaud Ms. Casey Edwards, a soon-to-be graduate from Chapin High School, for taking on Sanford and his crooked cronies. I really hope that she wins her suit. I also hope that the SC pols will grow a spine and impeach Sanford ASAP.

patriciathomas

Silly willi, socialism doesn't work.

Eyore

Doesn't care about the poor? I suppose a President who plans to tax all the goods and services that the poor depend on, such as energy, then tell them that he isn't going to raise their taxes "not one dime" is ok. Lies are ok if they come from the The Messiah!

slippery 25

I agree he is a very honest, caring man with long range plan for the people of SC. I love his common sense approach to politics and life. To say he does not care about children, poor and homeless is just not true.

TechLover

Yes, Sanford stands by his beliefs. He reminds me of someone who would watch someone drown instead of jumping in to save him because he doesn't believe it's right to swim on Sunday.

Only Blago is crooked out of all of those Chicago-area people you mentioned, southernguy08. I really hope that you dimwits do end up nominating Sanford as your party's nominee. That will give South Carolina to a Dem for the first time since 1976. The people in this state will not let Sanford get away with the criminal things he has done. Not me. Not Ms. Edwards. Not Cindi Ross Scoppe. Not any rational thinking South Carolinian.

grouse

Look at the state of his schools and yet he turns down stimulus money that could help. Just another grandstanding politician who doesn't care about his constituency.

TORTURE

Sanford is,in the parlance of politics.a beautiful loser.

Eyore

grouse.....I for one am GLAD he isn't eating at the stimulus trough. I don't want to be beholden to the Federal Government.

mad_max

Man I just love you "print some mo' money and gimme sompthin' for free" crowd. Sanford realizes this is just one big credit card bill and that in 6 or 8 years you will not be able to pay the interest, much less the principle. In 10 years, when the government is taking 90% of your income and you still can't pave the roads, keep the schools open, or pay for that $20 loaf of bread, just remember that Sanford told you so. All of your money will be going to pay for those federal programs you agree to when you take the stimulus, and the inflation caused by the borrowing. Yeh, you can all call him names and sue and all kinds of stuff, and you might win. But in 10 years you will be saying "maybe he was right". You can deficit spend and implement soicalist programs and bring a country to it's financial knees in 10 years. But when you realize that it doesn't work it takes 100 years to get out of the hole. Just ask the Russians. A recession or depression lasts 5 or 10 years but socialism lasts a lifetime and has never worked anywhere. So y'all idiots just keep hollering "me me me, gimme sompthin' free" but don't get used to it because it won't last.

The Knave

Here we have ole Jett and patriciathomas (she/he/it?) praising Sanford. Now, folks, this is the governor who has presided for years over what is arguably the most backward state in the Union. By every quality-of-life measure, SC is at or very near the very bottom. In other words, it's in the dumper. Now, most politicians, whether they be Republi-con or Demon-rat are self-aggrandizing, ill-informed, slothful, egotistical reprobates. And, in SC particularly, they are mostly concerned with preserving the status quo, which means continuing to promote policies that concentrate wealth and power in the hands of a relatively few people. Sanford is the champion of these folk. That's understandable since his heritage is consistent with that outlook. Sanford's fortune is derived from owning huge tracks of land euphemistically referred to as "plantations." Is there any place where class distinctions were more brightly defined than on plantations? So, if you favor substandard education at all levels, substandard health care, substandard cultural amenities, tax policies that favor the wealthy and well-connected, and high unemployment, then Sanford's your politician of choice.

Anyone notice last night that Obama admitted "we are out of money". What little bit was left he gave to the auto industry and banks. ATTENTION: The new bread lines will form at local local bank ... no money, just soup and dry crust of bread!

Traditional white, frat boys who love to play golf and hang out at the country club plantation are not currently in style as presidential candidates. The southern governors whose judgements as based on Bible-based gut instincts are not trusted outside of the south and the cowboy states. I doubt that they will come back in vogue by the next presidential election. Stanford seems like an o.k. guy but doesn't seem anything above average or have the ability to reach out beyond his social group. He should get somewhere between the number of votes that Huckaby and Brownback drew. The Republicans don't have a lot to choose from. He's probably as good as anybody else that's being put out there and is typical of the party.

Geistlich

Willi, I am a rational and thinking South Carolinian, and I support Mark Sanford. I also think you are about the most deluded, hide-bound, yeller-dog Democrat I have ever known about.

KSL

Willi has not breathed in and out enough times to understand what Mad Max is talking about.

crackerjack

Mark Sanford is doing a wonderful job over here. If they would let him give out school vouchers to parents, so their children wouldn't be forced to attend failing schools, that would weed out the sorry teachers from the good ones, and the scores would rise exponentially.

patriciathomas

I notice the socialists seem to dislike people with integrity and conservatives like Sanford. Who knew?

patriciathomas

The Knave, The Stupid would be a much more appropriate display name for you. (stupid = ignorant by choice.)

jack

Knave, your ignorance and bias are showing again. Sanford has the problem of having a DIMocRAT controlled Legislature, so if you want to talk about the state being in the dumper, it is the DIMs that have kept it that way since tie immemorial. Sanford ia a man of integrity who is not afraid to stand up against BimbObama and his DIMocRAT congressional shills by saying NO to federal contol of the state of SC. Thank you governor Sanford. You, no doubt are a fan of Schwarzeneger and the bankrupting CA DIM controlled legislature.

jack

Willie, I guess you really don't like folks that believe in working for what they have, right? BTW, when are you going to get a job?

jack

Yes, Sanford stands by his beliefs. He reminds me of someone who would watch someone drown instead of jumping in to save him because he doesn't believe it's right to swim on Sunday.

NoParty, "Traditional white, frat boys who love to play golf and hang out at the country club plantation are not currently in style as presidential candidates." This has to be the dumbest statement of the day. You mean the likes of Chappaquidic Ted, elitist BombObama, "hero" John sKerry don't belong to elite country clubs? Ya' reckon Sanford's "plantations" are anything like the Kennedy and sKerry compounds on Cape Cod? You really need to get your head out from where the sun never shines.

NoPartyFan

I could have given the same advice to the democrats when they ran Kerry, Teddy or Dukakis. Boston area Ivy league frat boys don't connect well outside their compounds and social circle.

KSL

As a person who attended an Ivy League college for one year, I can attest that it's not what it's cracked up to be. The first thing they do to you when you show up for orientation is to fill your head with how you are the best and the brightest of all who walk on the face of the earth. They continue that indoctrination the entire time you are there. Back when I attended, they told you that you virtually could not flunk out. You were good enough to get in, you would have to go to extreme measures to be dismissed. Now my time frame of being there exactly matched up the Hil. No doubt if I had not been persuaded to leave that bull, I would have wound up being one of the elitists. That's where the Ivy League politicians from both sides of the isle come from. Like the Jews in the Bible, they are the chosen ones.

dade30906

The stimulus standoff by Governor Mark Sanford with his rejectionist stance reinforcing has boosted the GOP's reputation as the Party of No.

NoPartyFan

It's all about wars of the brainwashing controllers: Ivy league schools, the Republican party, the Democratic party, all the chosen ones of various religions, the Nazis, the Communists, Capitalists, the military. Stand together and protect your own and smash anyone who's not with you with a hammer. It's very visious.

NoPartyFan

I think that was supposed to be vicious.
