BARNWELL, S.C. - Mrs. Elizabeth Grubbs Witherspoon, 94, widow of James Hugh Witherspoon Sr., passed away Friday, May 22, 2009 at the Aiken Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Witherspoon was born in Barnwell County on February 14, 1915. She was the daughter of the late Judson Buist Grubbs and Janie Susan Grubbs. She was a graduate of Coker College and a retired employee of the Barnwell Post Office. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Barnwell, the Gen. John Barnwell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a charter member of the Cherokee Garden Club and several bridge clubs. She was devoted and loving mother and grandmother. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 25, 2009 at 12 Noon at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Steve Burnette and Rev. Posey Belcher officiating. Burial will follow in the Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery at the airport. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. The family suggest that memorials be made to the charity of one's choice. Survivors include two sons; James Hugh (Melodee) Witherspoon Jr. of Barnwell and Steven Hall (Donna) Witherspoon of Salem SC; grandchildren, James Hugh (Nicole) Witherspoon III of Georgetown, Melodee Anne (Luke) Dolan of Augusta Ga., Steven (Connie) Witherspoon Jr. of Arlington VA. And Ellen Elizabeth (Brent) Busha of Greenville, SC. seven great grandchildren; one sister, Sara Grubbs McWhorter of Asheville NC. She was predeceased by at brother, Elmer W.
