Disgraced Pelosi should pack it in

  • Follow Editorials

Nancy Pelosi has accused her government of lying to her.

But many are coming to believe that she's the liar.

In a partisan fever to jump on the now-trendy anti-U.S. bandwagon, she has turned her back on the people who have kept us safe since Sept. 11, 2001.

We believe she's lying when she says the CIA did not brief her on the use of waterboarding as early as 2002. And not just lying. Bill Clinton lied about about sex. Under oath, no less. But we believe Nancy Pelosi is lying about national security, and is harming the United States' image and perhaps giving succor to our sworn enemies.

To his great credit, Leon Panetta, CIA director and lifelong member of Pelosi's own party, discredits her by flatly saying what she has said is not true.

Panetta has put country before party.

Pelosi is putting self above all else.

Either she is lying or she's delusional. Either way, she's unfit to be speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, third in line to the presidency.

Absent some evidence that the CIA lied to her as she alleges it did, Ms. Pelosi should resign her position as speaker and apologize to the people she has defamed.

Pelosi has lost support and respect among her colleagues, and her public approval rating, already below 40 percent, is in a free-fall. She has lost all credibility, she has frittered away any effectiveness she had, and she has become a caricature of herself. It's hard to see how she could be an effectual leader at this point.

Every day she fidgets her way through this minefield of her own making is another day she has singlehandedly derailed Washington at a most perilous point in the nation's recovery from the worst economy in several generations.

And let us not forget that we are, still, engaged in a war on two fronts. How can we possibly endure a Speaker of the House who turns on her own government and lies in an attempt to indict it?

If Ms. Pelosi cared for the country the way she appears to care for her own preservation and power, she would quickly step aside and humbly apologize for denigrating the people who protect her and every other American.

Her presence has become corrosive to the body politic. Increasing calls for investigations into what she knew and when she knew it risk further outbreaks of cannibalism in the nation's capital at a time when we must come together and defeat a common enemy and lift ourselves up from the recent economic collapse.

President Obama cannot have it both ways on this matter, as is his wont. Either he must back his CIA director or the House speaker -- but not both, for only one can be telling the truth.

Unless America truly has descended into the depths of self-loathing and total unaccountability, the speaker must go.

ACES, of course you know that

ACES, of course you know that some of the CIA documents in support of their claim that Pelosi, et al, were fully briefed about the fact that "enhanced interrogation" had already taken place prior to the briefing of the members of Congress actually made no positively irrefutable statement in support of that claim. Instead, testimony has now revealed that comments by the CIA, to the effect that "we think" or we would expect" that they were briefed, are extremely weak and unsupportable evidence acceptable for the support of any claim that Pelosi, et al had ACTUALLY been briefed before the fact. Watch it ACES, as you continue to pass judgment on political issues you might just find you once again must eat crow as your employer issues yet another "we regret." I.E.: "The May 19 editorial "Talk about talking points!" should have said that New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd used, without attribution, a paragraph from a blog written by Talking Points Memo editor Josh Marshall." And, "The Augusta Chronicle regrets the error." Yes, Dowd erred, she should have cited the author of that "paragraph, she should have been chastised, " but a paragraph hardly a column makes. GGpap

More important than Pelosi is

More important than Pelosi is the direction she wants to give Congress. There is mixed opinion on whether a so-called Truth Commission is needed. Such a commission, loaded with people like Pelosi who always know "the truth," is no truth commission. It is a kangaroo court. In addition, anyone who thinks such a commission won't come to dominate the news and therefore Congress' attention is very naive.

And then what happens to the millions of jobless Americans? What happens to healthcare? What happens fixing our financial system? What happens to rebuilding our economy?

Is all that and more going to be sacrificed or put on hold to satisfy some Congressional egos, to gain revenge on Republicans for having had the temerity to win two elections?

The idea of a truth commission trying to find out how our bankers, Wall Streeters, Congress went wrong might be useful, although again no one can realistically expect Congress to do anything that isn't poisonously partisan.

It is sad to think that we pay those clowns to "strut and fret their hour upon the stage."

This is not unusual for Dem

This is not unusual for Dem politicians and Dem voters don't expect much from their candidates. Pelosi's actions won't hurt her career at all. The scary part is that after Obama, the next two in line are Beiden and Pelosi. Thanks Dem voters. (Next would be Sen. Byrd and then Hillary Rodam)

Call me a callous liberal, but if I could have my way, I'd sacrifice Pelosi to the GOP hyenas so they could have one morsel of victory... They are so starved for some kind of victory that they may be satiated by this for the rest of the year while the Democrats get some real work done.

It is time the people of this

It is time the people of this nation start looking back at our history. We faught a revolution in 1776, and we fought the civil warin 1864(this was really a revolution) as the south revolted from the Union. If you look at the time frame it was right at 100 years between the two. In 1976 or thereabout we should have had another revolution. It was during the "70s that the polititions in Washington started to think of themselves instead of the country. The people of this great nation should have revolted against the government and fired every last one of them, and start over. Now thanks to people who feel the government is the anawer to all our problems, we have all the problems! We have lying Pelosi, bumbling Biden, and a president that wants to make the country a third world nation in kess than a full term in office.

Let's hope Pelosi Retires,

Let's hope Pelosi Retires, she has enough time in to draw a full congressional retirement. She has gerrymandered legislation that has brought her family much wealth and has made powerful friends to entreat her until her dying day. She's still popular enough to make reams of money touring the California Lecture circuit. And who better to advise and encourage young neurotics on how to lie with a straight facelift...

BDITTLE, Democrats getting some real work done? That's hysterical! Thanks, I needed a good laugh! And for those who still haven't faced reality, take a hard look. The Dems in congress are already beginning to circle the wagons around San Fran Nan. She will come out of this with nothing more than her oversprayed hair a little out of place. Politics 101...Democrats don't resign because they're never guilty of anything! They might get voted out of office when their constituents wake up, but they don't resign. Get over it and have a little faith that by the 2010 elections, people might have gained a little common sense since the great "change" of 2008.

Pelosi is a GOP smokescreen

Pelosi is a GOP smokescreen for the terrible ills in their own Party. It's like gay marriage and flag burning, issues that did not mean much but distracted people and the media from the real bad things (like torture to link Iraq & AlQueda) that they Cheney man was doing. In fact, I hope they keep Cheney & Limbaugh on the stump because that will really help them attract more people to the Party of NO.

Niko, I agree that the Pelosi thing is pretty much another case of a politician sticking his/her foot in mouth and not much more, but I feel like letting the GOP rally around this issue is good for the Democrats. When the elections in 2010 come around, they can cite that they gave Pelosi a hardtime for a year. Great accomplishment.

Yeah, ELLIOT, believe a member of congress over a CIA officer. After all, we know congress is such a pool of truth. And of course, Democrats never lie. And NIKO, leave it to you to find a way to blame the GOP for Nancy Pelosi getting caught in a blatant lie. The Dems are peeing on their own feet, and none of them realize it yet. I am sitting back and enjoying this show so much. Sure beats cable!

Whole lot of false bravodo

Whole lot of false bravodo there bdittle. Lot more than Pelosi going wrong. BTW, what is the latest on the promise to close Gitmo? Seems that blew up in the Dims face yesterday. All the new spending bills in California...up in smoke. Biden and Reid have been busy covering their blunders. A whole lot more than Pelosi. She is going to need an extra dose of Botox to keep that face straight.

In 5 or 6 years when Obama

In 5 or 6 years when Obama puts this country in the same position that California is in now, nobody will even remember the Bush administration. Obama's socialist policies are essentially the same policies that California has had for a while and look what it has done to them. When we reach the point that no one will loan us money, we have to close schools, layoff police and firemen, cut off welfare spending and free medical care....well the primary Democrat demographic will have much more to worry about than "enhanced interrogation techniques". California is a microcosm of where we are going with this socialist government. Take a good look at it. Some of the highest taxes in the nation, people and businesses leaving in droves, dead broke, and can't get a loan anywhere. But they have great welfare....at least they HAD great welfare. Now they are going to have to start cutting and that is a good thing. Maybe we should let the country go broke. Starvation is a great motivator for going to work. Write the president and your representatives. NO BAILOUT FOR CALIFORNIA. Let's see how much welfare they have left when they actually have to pay for it as they go instead of borrowing.
