Police say robbers might be juveniles

Aiken County investigators said Monday they are looking for three people, two possibly juveniles, in Saturday's armed robbery of a Beech Island convenience store that was hit once before.

According to an incident report from the Aiken County Sheriff's Office, witnesses told police the three male suspects entered the Manis Mart at 211 Cary Drive about 9:20 p.m. Saturday and ordered a worker to open a safe at gunpoint.

They fled with $6,500.

Capt. Elwell said one, if not two, of the robbers could be juveniles based on their size in a surveillance video.

The same location was robbed in March. But Capt. Elwell said Saturday's armed robbery was the first of a business in the sheriff's office's jurisdiction since the department started concentrated patrols after a number of armed robberies.

Anyone with information on Saturday's robbery is asked to call (803) 642-1761.

Officers say they're looking for a person or persons believed to have been driving a blue Chevrolet Tahoe with chrome rims.

North Augusta City Council OKs increase in sewer fees

North Augusta residents will soon be paying more for sewer service.

City council voted Monday on first reading to pass on a rate increase that was passed to the city by Aiken County. The county increased rates by 10 cents to $1.30 per 1,000 gallons.

Residents can expect an increase of about 57 cents per month. The new rate will take effect July 1.

The council delayed the selection of a mayor pro tempore. Councilwoman Carolyn Baggott, who just finished serving a two-year term in the post, and Councilman Jason Whinghter nominated Councilman Arthur Shealy. Mayor Lark Jones and Councilman Ken McDowell nominated Councilman Jimmy Adams. Councilwoman Pat Carpenter was absent, and both nominees voted for themselves.

After a brief discussion between Mr. Shealy and Mr. Adams, the election was postponed until the June 1 meeting.

Reward offered for tips on fires in November

A $10,000 reward remains available for information that will help authorities solve an arson case in which a historic train depot, a house and a hunting cabin were burned last fall in Screven and Burke counties, according to the Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner's office.

"Commissioner John Oxendine has offered up to $10,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for these fires," said Glenn Allen, a spokesman for Mr. Oxendine.

The three fires occurred between 6 p.m. Nov. 25 and 6 a.m. Nov. 26 at separate sites on Millhaven Plantation in Screven County and Wade Plantation in Burke County, said special agent Gary Nicholson of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Thomson field office.

Ex-teacher receives probation in 2008 case

A former South Aiken High School teacher was sentenced Monday to three years' probation in a 2008 case in which he was accused of inappropriate contact with a female student.

Craig R. Kessler pleaded guilty to contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He was given a three-year sentence that was suspended to probation, said Strom Thurmond Jr., solicitor for the 2nd Judicial Circuit.

Mr. Thurmond said Mr. Kessler was originally charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature in addition to contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He said the assault charge was dropped because "we were not going to be able to establish physical contact beyond kissing."

Mr. Thurmond said Mr. Kessler also was ordered to receive counseling as prescribed by the Department of Probation, to have no contact with the victim or her family and to resign immediately from the school.

I hope each one of these pathetic [filtered word] robbers who have been in the news lately run into the victim who carries and stops them permanently. They dont deserve to live in a civilized society and even jail is to good for them!!

Getting a little tired of these punks. A shot to kill order should be put in place.

patriciathomas

Our subsidy programs sure have produced a lot of news worthy people today. Look for more tomorrow.

andywarhol

Man, why am I never around when these punks try to rob someone? I'd love to leave em in a pool ten shades of their own bodily fluids. Then laugh when their [filtered word] families get on the news talking bout how good of a little boy Tyrone was.

gnumbgnuts

Gangsta midget!

stillamazed

The Burlington robbery sounds like maybe an inside job to me, at least someone who knew when the employees counted up money, why didn't store security check the bathrooms and back areas to make sure everyone was out of the store when it closed?

MeinAugusta2

Even if the little thugs who robbed the Manis Mart are juveniles, I hope they get what they deserve. If you are old enough to point a gun at someone, you are old enough to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Parents, grandparents, or whoever else may be the caregiver of these children as they are growing up - let's have some accountability here. The people who are working and trying to support their families don't need to have their lives put in jeopardy because of thugs that don't want to work. It is time for this garbage to stop.

lmaooo gnumbgnuts... that's what I thought too when I first seen the picture!!!!

It's time for every law abiding citizen to get a permit, buy a pistol, and carry it everywhere. The law enforcement people cannot issue a shoot to kill order because it isn't politically correct, but we can. If you value your life, the lives of you family, the security of your business and employees, and the money and possessions that you work hard to acquire then you should be carrying a gun. These punks do not value anything except YOUR money and property. They will take your life for a few dollars. They will kill you, your wife, and your kids just for looking at them the wrong way. Law enforcement cannot or will not stop them. We can. YES WE CAN.

andywarhol

I'm sorry for abusing the comments policy.l

andywarhol

That was brilliant Mad Max. I'd still like to leave em chokin on their own blood.

LadyCisback

I feel violence is not the answer.. but in this case there is nothing more that can be done... it's time we take a stand and if law enforcement isn't making this town safe then it's up to us...

andywarhol

I must need to go back and read the policy, because I don't know what I said that was wrong on the last one.

Hepkikyo

Since when does giving someone a kiss equate to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature? I don't condone teachers kissing students, but paaaleeeeese! Those charges make it sound like he beat the snot out of her with a lead pipe. Also, I agree with those who advocate legally arming yourself. My response to an armed robbery? BANG BANG BANG and repeat as necessary.

corgimom

"Assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature: an unlawful act of violent injury to another person accompanied by any circumstances of aggravation. Typical types of aggravating circumstances which would suffice for a conviction on assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature are:

use of a deadly weapon (gun, knife, baseball bat, garden tool, etc.) that inflict serious bodily injury;
infliction of serious bodily injury such as painful gashes or serious injuries to the face;
disparity between the sizes, ages and physical conditions of the parties, or impaired health on the part of the victim;
resistance of lawful authority accompanied by an unlawful act against the arresting officer, even though no bodily harm may be inflicted;
indecent liberties or familiarities with a female"
Sounds to me like the parents went after him. The law is the law. He knew better, he has only himself to blame.
