Liberal columnist has sunk to new low

  • Follow Letters

Eugene Robinson has lowered himself -- which I didn't think was possible -- by his name-calling ("Dick Cheney -- from vice president to geyser of political nonsense," May 18).

His referring to former Vice President Dick Cheney as a crazy old coot and an Old Faithful of self-serving nonsense, and referring to Rush Limbaugh as a gasbag, is so sad. I always know what to expect when I see his columns in the paper. How very juvenile. He can't get his point of view across without name-calling.

Enough already with his garbage. Let's get rid of Robinson in your paper.

Pat Tortorello, how is Robinson any different from any and every other liberal columnist and commentator you've ever read or heard? This has been their only shtick since the early '80s. Haven't you noticed the primary news source for the left is a series of "comedy" shows? "Ignore the fool behind the curtain".

GACopperhead

I think his descriptions are accurate and appropriate.

I never want to hear liberals complain about conservatives not being civil. MSNBC and others use the raunchiest attempts to slam conservatives in mean ways that I've ever seen. They always attack personally anyone who opposes the Democratic agenda. It's their M.O. Even Obama must be disturbed by the likes of Matthews, Olberman and Maddow.

grouse

Actually, PT, you tend to stoop to name-calling whenever someone disagrees with you here, so I'd be careful about throwing stones.

Meanwhile in the real world, more people realize that both parties are full of blowhards, gasbags, and geysers of political nonsense. I wish.

GACopperhead

It's hilarious, no matter what party is targeted, it POLITICS! That ANYONE would gripe about name-calling is petty. If you don't want to hear or read it, then don't. Mr. Torterello sounds like a school child for saying anything at all, but mostly sounds like someone who can't handle the truth when he sees it and then wants to censor it. I thought that was, supposedly, a Democrat tactic.......southern, the cartoon, while I saw what it was saying, could have used a less incendiary analogy. Nevertheless, I support total freedom of political speech and believe that the incident was blown out of proportion. Mindnumbed soldiers? At least they have a mind....Rush, Hannity and O'Reilly don't even have minds to be numbed.....

HotFoot

Sure, remove Robinson.....and then who's left (no one....just the Right). If Malkin isn't a name-calling twit, I don't know who is.

willistontownsc

Let's get rid of them all: Star Parker, Camden's Kathleen Parker, Robinson, Malkin, Cal Thomas, the guy from George Mason. That ought to serve the public well.

willistontownsc

And while we are at it, NYT should get rid of Brooks.

Question: What's the difference between Rush Limbaugh and the Hindenburg?

TechLover

Maybe he should have just told Cheney to go F*** himself. Then he would be using one of Cheney's adult methods of getting his point across.

shaglorious

TechLover, I loved it when Cheney said that to Leahy. Leahy had been talking his smack about Cheney and then thought he could pretend a fews days later it was just politics as usual. Cheney's mistake was thinking that Leahy actually meant a word he said.

Motorman5039

TechLover: Absolutely point on...Those were the famous words of the great Dick Cheney!!!Five (5) deferments from Vietnam Cheney!!!

TechLover

shag:I guess that means you're against the LTE and that name calling is OK.

dashiel

Give up?

corgimom

But Rush Limbaugh IS a gasbag. What is the big mystique about him, anyway? Why do people take it so personally if someone is critical of him, or doesn't like him? He's an entertainer making huge bucks to be obnoxious.

Grasshopper

Why should the progressives stop their propaganda machine, against the republicans, when it works. With Americas Jerry Springer mentality, it has become our culture for character assassination. The republicans instead of fighting back, tried to appease the left. Wow, that was smart, compromise your parties base, because some one beats you up with a PC handbook. The only slogan I have herd from the republicans "We are not the party of NO". What in the heck is that, will that earn my vote. Republicans need to be the party of NO, and need to get off their fat butts and speak for their base. Nancy just made a political disaster for herself, and all the republicans can do is ask for an apology? Weakling republicans, stand up and fight for the conservative ideas that once made you successful.

corgimom

Do any of you think, for one minute, that Rush Limbaugh cares what any of us think about him? He just signed a $400M contract. He's laughing all the way to the bank. All of you who get so offended- he's a talk show radio host. Why would any rational adult get upset over criticism of Rush Limbaugh?

shaglorious

Techlover, It does not matter if I am for or against the letter. It is politics. The problem is journalists are supposed to report the NEWS, not interject their political agenda.

dashiel

Answer: One's a flaming nazi gasbag, the other's a dirigible. [Nice try, corgimom. Rush is the Doughberry Pillboy of the GOP. He has "talent on (sub-prime) loan from God."]

Grasshopper

Hey Mom politics it is just like sports it is a rivalry between the teams. Every entertainer has their wacky followers! Rush does anything and everything to annoy the left, to put them on the defense. The left falls for his tactics every time. Maybe, though doubtful, the republicans can learn from his propagandist tactics to put the left on the defense.

colcamp1

Anytime you headline an article with Liberal this or Conservative that, you hurt your credibility. IMHO

shaglorious

My Gosh Justus, Can you write ANYTHING without bringing up race? I think you need therapy.

colcamp1

" Sheepies"! We all know that is the product of an independent thinker.

themaninthemirror

The problem with Rush Limbaugh is that he doesn't not remember where he came from. I remember when I first started listening to him in 1989, before he became the bigblowhard he is now, and he he had been invited to some big dinner party hosted by, and as he put it, some rich Republicans, was that they just wanted to see who he was. At that point in time he was not considered "one of them". Rush's views are so far to the right that he is out of touch with American reality.

Grasshopper

Justus4, throws the race card in the debate, that is shocking.
