At first blush I was impressed with Mr. Mathews LTE. He directed his statements to the Christians that might be reading his comments; he did not insist that I, a non-believer, do the same. Good for Mr. Mathews. Unfortunately, Mr. Mathews charged the followers of Christ with the failure of Social and Medicare because of their failure to wage an all out war against "choice." That is a BIG stretch, sir. I will not attack your religious beliefs, sir; but, I surely cannot agree with your conclusions. While I am not promoting abortion, I must say that the more folks paying into the program, the more that will be drawing from it in the end. Eventually it may fail regardless of your position. GGpap

...and if abortion had been illegal, the system would have wound up paying for the horrific results of botched abortions (because there will ALWAYS be abortions, legal or illegal, make no mistake) as well as the health and housing programs for the mothers who could not afford to have a child and would have chosen to continue their education or job training rather than early motherhood. I don't buy your argument for a second, and as GGpap notes, it doesn't belong with the rest of your argument.

And to add to what Hotfoot and GGpap said, there wouldn't be a whole to of people add to SS if abortion was illegal, because women would die by the hundreds of thousands in this country during childbirth, just like they did as recently as 37 years ago. Most, if not all, of the money intended for SS would instead be going towards funeral expenses for these healthy women that were killed by anti-choice laws.

I think you are all missing the point of the article.

Abortion is a form of legalized torture. The only plus side I can see to it is that democrats and some independants are the likely users and are therefore murdering their own political base. Even so, murder of innocent children who have made no conscious effort to hurt or kill anyone are placed on a level lower than a terrorist who makes a conscious effort to kill thousands, if not millions, of people at a time.

Southernguy, how do you know there is so much money to be made in abortions? Show me some figures. Because it's a surgical procedure, and any surgical procedure costs a lot of money. Most places that perform abortions do it at cost with donated services.

Abortion clinics have a profit of ONLY 3%. THREE PERCENT! Meaning that the OTHER 97% of the money Planned Parenthood and others like them get go solely towards donations. Get the facts, not the misogynist spin. Abortion is NOT torture, not in the least bit of sense. Capital punishment is legalized torture, just like waterboarding.
