America stands at important crossroads

  • Follow Letters

This letter is dedicated to many Americans 50 years old or younger, and all our politicians and bureaucrats in the federal government.

The majority of you have disregarded history and believe that you, and America, are invincible. You believe the country does not need a sound financial base to survive. You believe you can spend your way out of debt. You have allowed other people (educators and the media, etc.) to establish moral standards for you and your children.

You believe the world is a safe place as long you have amicable relationships with all other nations. The rich believe that the government has a responsibility to look after the poor, as long as they are left alone. The poor believe the government has a moral obligation to support them and their families.

History tells us that people and governments repeat the same mistakes. History tells us that the world is not safe. There are more dictatorships than democracies. Mankind has a long way to go before the world becomes safe. America and other democracies must be prepared to sacrifice for years to come to make the world safe.

Every American needs to answer these questions: What if other nations refuse to honor our monetary debt? Can America survive? What if we do not have the resources to defend ourselves? What happens if the government cannot feed and cloth the poor? What if our politicians decide to do away with democracy in favor of a dictatorship? Do we honestly believe that a dictatorship cannot happen in America when world history shows otherwise?

We are at a defining moment as a free and independent nation. Considering how far we have deviated from democracy, it is doubtful that we alone can defeat our politicians. State governments, supported by all Americans, need to act as one voice to change this situation. State governments must demand their, and our, rights under the Constitution.

A.C. Forgay, North Augusta, S.C.

Sorry, Mr. Forgay. You seem

Sorry, Mr. Forgay. You seem to have forgotten that we are the UNITED States of America, not the 50 DIVIDED States of America. All must stand as one in this important time. I think that you all who are 50 and over need to get your minds out of the gutter and think about who divided we still are because the federal government under the previous president denied the sovereignty of many states on many issues. We started to deviate from democracy when the voters in your generation, Mr. Forgay, dismissed Jimmy Carter in 1980. The slide has been nonstop since. Obama cannot just put a band-aid on a problem that started on January 20, 1981. He needs to do many drastic things to get us back on the right track. And many of these things that the right will NOT like and some that I and the fellow progressive hard-liners probably won't like, either.

This guy is all over the
Unpublished

This guy is all over the board...but his main complaint sounds like he don't like the process no more, possibly because of the new president. He will deny that fact and point to the Constitution and violations (in his mind) that puts the nation at risk. Heres the problem: When Bush authorized illegal wiretapping of Americans, he violated the Constitution. Ol' A.C., and other like-minded individuals failed to respond as responsible citizens. They supported Bush's criminal violations for, whatever reason, but now they're crying about "crossroads" Ha! By not properly responding with, "unauthorized listening to Americans is wrong! And illegal detainment is wrong!" They are not credible on worrying about the Constitution, just which political party is doing it. Yeah, yeah, 9/11, but that did not change the Constitution and more info will soon prove just how reckless the previous administration actually was...stay tuned.

Any government that will

Any government that will torture will, of course, do many other illegal things. It's not going to be long before the police start doing it(torture) to us. The right only worries about itself. It ignores the Constitution ("I'm the decider!) It will rally against Democrats who are trying to fix what was left to them, crying DEFICIT! DEBT!, forgetting the words of Carl Rove. "Deficits don't matter." They say that we're getting deeper in debt to China, forgetting Bush's "stimulus" which was borrowed from China, and was only done to mollify the middle class, who didn't benefit one iota from the accompanying 1.3 trillion tax cut to the wealthy. The only reason I bring up the past it ro remind Republicans that the policies of their party didn't work, and they had BETTER learn from their errors.

I understand we agree we need

I understand we agree we need to learn from our errors. But instead of each of us disrespecting each other, knowing we all have something in common that something must happen, then why not focus on what we can do? Obviously, some dislike the previous presidency while others dislike what we have now. A lot needs to change, so why not start it ourselves instead of just sitting here complaining?

Our current administration

Our current administration doesn't recognize the terms "responsibility , accountability, honor or honesty". Until we get a change of leadership, our country will continue to crumble.

And the previous

And the previous administration did? The facts are, PT, that the previous administration was SO BAD that the electorate voted against it to the extreme. I would have preferred a more moderate candidate to be elected, but Obama was, even in his most extreme, a better choice than one who, just a day or two before the economic collapse, said "the economy is strong." He then "explained" he meant the FUNDAMENTALS of the economy were strong. He was wrong there too. You tout the virtues of the Republican party, and fail to acknowledge the horrible damage it has done.

Patricia our government

Patricia our government doesn't understand private ownership and private property now either! Those nasty wire taps refered to before , Obama voted to approve FISA, yep the same ones you complain about now as a violation of your rights under Bush! It really is not clear (according to a congressional investigation) If the CIA inhanced interrogation techniques raise to the level of torture! One person against the CIA method left out rulings that said that level of interrogation was not torture!

Snap, I agree. The current

Snap, I agree. The current administration is DOING something about the situation, and obviously, doing what the voters wanted, as it has a better than 60% approval rating. Bush NEVER even had close to that. We need the Republican party, a more moderate one that observes the Constitution, opposes torture and listens to ALL the citizens. Not one who says deficits don't matter, or I'm the decider. The Republican party is currently saying that it's the only group that knows anything, and this attitude is causing it to lose more constituents daily. I am one of them. There must be a balance of fiscal responsibilty and attention to the people they serve. I am one who believe that the government must do what the AMERICAN people say it must do, right or wrong. It is not here to do what it wants, it is here to SERVE the people. I left my parents 34 years ago, and don't need someone to do for or to me what it thinkls best.

GaCopperhead, Obama

GaCopperhead, Obama campaigned in all 57 states, didn't know Kentucky boardered Illinois, lied about his postion on born alive abortions and has the economic understanding of s fence post turtle! The press covered for him and continues to. Think of the Air Force one fly over of New Yoork! Think of all the corrupt people he appointed and Vetted that can not filll cabent posts. Think about Gaitner and his first press conferance when he didn't have a cluwe what he was talking about. Think about how many times he has reversed himself (you think some stupid reporter would have ask Obama where and what he was going to do with the prisoners at Gitmo when he closed it) but no. Now we are going to have hugh inflation and mega debt as far as the eye can see! Obama is a catastrophy and the press is either to complacent or ignorant to call him on it! We simply can not barrow billions up on billions of dollars and not have it effect us. 1/3 lof ever dollar spent by Obama will be barrowed!

As long as, "we the people"

As long as, "we the people" blame every politician or government official for every wrong in our society, we cannot be a better country. Most private citizens are way over their heads in debt, not just the gov't. This mess spriralled out of control when banks got greedy and did not go by rules that were designed to prevent this exact thing from happening. If we cannot be a more responsible society, there will be more gov't control because some where down the line there has to be a stopping point. Society's have to learn by their mistakes and not repeat them or worse scenarios will happen and then when it does don't go pointing fingers at everyone else.

jubalaearly, YOU and the other right wingers ARE part of the problem, NOT the solution. Any debt-solving proposal that comes up will be opposed to all of you anyhow. That is why Obama needs to listen to the liberals for once and stop trying to play nice with a bunch of people who want Obama to FAIL.

BABSMO This was being taught

BABSMO This was being taught in College level finance courses, that banks lend their way out of bad debt, and that corporate growth through a high debt to Equity ratio was practical. This nations corporate, educational, and political leaders have failed. The internal and external controls to prevent corruption within government and corporations has failed. The two party system has failed. The only fix is common sense capitalism, and back to governing according the the US Constitution.

I am a horrible speller and

I am a horrible speller and have decreased sensitivity in my fingers that makes key boarding difficult at times. That being said, explain to me how we will pay off the debt of the magnitude we are producing? 1 out of 3 dollars spent by the government will will be barrowed! More money will be barrowed under Obama than has been barrowed since the founding of America. Dumping this much money into the economy will produce inflation because the value of the dollar will decrease becuase of the law of supply and demand. Please explain why I am wrong!

This CONservative starts

This CONservative starts ranting about OUR government and ends up complaining about states reghts. Which is it they want a United States or a seperate state? I wonder if the writer understands the need for defense, interstate commerce, roads schools etc. I especially found the statement about the rich having a responsibility for taking care of the poor quite funny.

bdlittle, Its a simple

bdlittle, Its a simple economic model. low interest rates + increased government spending = high inflation. This is why conservatives are concerned. Not to mention, economist are stating we have a debt economy. Try running your house hold on a debt economy. The United States does not have an unlimited amount of resources just as you. Now you convince me how a debt economy works? Do under stand what inflation means?

Miltion, I promise you it is not that simple... I suggest reading Krugman's 'The Return of Depression Economics and the Crisis of 2008' for starters... then some writings about monetary policy and controlled inflation. I cannot possibly convince you in a AC posting.

by babsmo on Mon May 18, 2009

by babsmo on Mon May 18, 2009 8:08 AM The politicians are irresponsible! They voted for the stimulas package with out reading it or understanding what was in it! Ear marks are stuck into bills and passed with no concern for thier effects (please see Feinstein"s billion dollar ear mark for a company her husband bought stock in, Murtha's bill that gave millions to a company he is connected with). The community reinvestment act that forced banks to give sub prime loans. Barny Frank and Chris Dodd preventing further regulation of Fannie Mea and Freddie Mac. Nancy Pelosie flying all over the world on the Tax payers dime! Yes I will point fingers at politicians, they are corrupt and irresponsible!
