Jackets drop series finale against Drive

In Greenville, S.C., Anthony Rizzo homered twice in the Drive's 11-2 win over the Augusta GreenJackets on Thursday night.

Greenville took three of four from the GreenJackets, who won Monday's series opener.

Mike Loberg drilled a two-run home run in the ninth inning, his first of the season for Augusta.

Mike Loree (1-4) took the loss. He allowed six runs and eight hits in 4q innings. Casey Kelly (5-0) earned the win.

- In Columbia, Nick Ebert had two home runs and six RBI to lead South Carolina (35-19, 15-13 SEC) to a 7-2 win over Georgia (35-18, 15-13) in the opener of a three-game series.

Gamecocks starter Sam Dyson threw a complete game, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six and walking two.

Augusta State signs Virginia prep star

Virginia prep standout Dominic Morra has signed a national letter-of-intent to play for Augusta State next season, coach Dip Metress announced Thursday.

Morra, a 6-foot, 175 pound guard from Lake Braddock High School in Burke, Va., averaged 30 points, seven rebounds and four assists a game in his senior season.

- Georgia junior first baseman Rich Poythress is among 16 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, given annually to the top player in college baseball by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Three finalists will be announced in June. The winner will announced July 2.

Sorenstam to have baby girl this fall

Hall of Fame golfer Annika Sorenstam is going to have a girl this fall.

The 38-year-old Swede and her husband, Mike McGee , announced the gender of her first baby on her blog. She retired from the LPGA Tour last year after 72 victories and 10 majors.

- Clemson's golf course was recognized as one of the top college golf layouts in the country.

Links Magazine recently rated the John E. Walker Sr. Golf Course at Clemson as among the top 25 collegiate courses in the country. Clemson came in 23rd in the magazine's ranking.

Bills' Lynch appeals 3-game suspension

Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch has filed an appeal with the NFL contesting his suspension without pay for the first three games of the season.

Lynch was suspended in April for violating the league's personal conduct policy after he pleaded guilty in March to a misdemeanor gun charge.

Skiing

Miller says he plans to ski next season

Bode Miller plans to ski next season but won't commit to the Vancouver Olympics.

The two-time overall World Cup winner disclosed his plans to his ski manufacturer. Miller skipped the final four stops of last season to spend time with his 1-year-old daughter and said he was considering retirement.

Tennis

Top seeds advance to Madrid quarters

Defending champion Andy Murray , top-ranked Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer advanced to Madrid Open quarterfinals.

Andy Roddick advanced after Nikolay Davydenko withdrew with a leg injury. Roddick will next face Federer, who defeated James Blake 6-2, 6-4.

Cycling

Italian maintains overall lead at Giro

Italy's Danilo Di Luca retained the overall Giro d'Italia lead, Lance Armstrong lost time again and Michele Scarponi won the sixth stage.

Di Luca, of LPR Brakes, maintained a 5-second lead over Thomas Lovkvist in the overall standings.
