What's the matter with voter ID?

  • Follow Letters

It is time for Americans to stop acting like victims of the system and stand for themselves.

It is true that many injustices were done in the past to people of color: American Indians, Hispanics, African-Americans, Asians -- the list goes on. It is time now to move forward with the advances made by the civil rights movement that continue to be made.

Yes, we need watchdogs to ensure we do not slip back, and we need to ensure that freedom and equality is for all American citizens. However, a picture ID is a requirement for most anything you do -- drive, get a job, buy alcohol, buy firearms legally and appear in court. So why not to vote?

In response to, and in agreement with your statement that "a picture ID is a requirement for most anything you do -- drive, get a job, buy alcohol, buy firearms legally and appear in court. So why not to vote?" I must point out that, while your question identifies a common sense FACT, some folks out there simply refuse to exercise common sense; they would rather offer insipid and untenable arguments that refer to presumed impositions by government on low income, racial, or disabled American voters. However, the right to protest is protected by the 1st Amendment; and, unfortunately, that right is often exercised by folks that are - well - those that are inclined to be a part of the rabble rouser groups in America. So, Mr. jsherrill, be prepared for the flack that may be coming your way. :o) GGpap

When an ID is provided free of charge, and people continue to argue that it somehow discriminates, then they have proven that they just like to pretend to be a victim.

With a picture id that can be checked, it would make elections much more difficult to steal. If the id had a bar code, it could stop multiple votes by individuals. It would also make correlation between the millions of fantasy voters registered by ACORN and the millions of fantasy votes easier. A picture id for voters will be fought every step of the way.

If voter ID was enforced a lot of politicians would never have gotten their jobs!

When first passed, the ID was not free. They changed it so the law could pass muster in the courts. That's not enough for the Repubs in the statehouse. Now you'll have to have a birth certificate, passport, or naturalization papers to vote.(which are not free of charge) The intent of both laws is simple, make it as difficult as possible to vote, especially for poor, minority, or elderly citizens. If the Repubs had their way, you would have to be a white, male, landowner to vote. Same in SC where their trying to eliminate the extended early voting period.

You all must be in this country illegally to advocate voting without ID.I had to show 3 forms of ID to vote and one was my voter registration.

Any groups resistance to voter ID is just to maintain their ability to commit fraud.

I agree with SisterA, when the law was made, there were too many complaints, and so to make it "easier" for those complaining, the id was offered (in most places, not all) free - they just had to come and get it. They still complained. I'm just wondering, why can't the groups that mobilized to get such large numbers of the poor, minorities and the elderly to the polls not do the same to get these folks to get their photo id? If you are a bonafide citizen, then you should have documentation somewhere that states that you are. With a photo id requirement in place, and abided by, there would be less rumblings from either side concerning voter fraud.

If the state requires a photo ID to vote, how can ACORN function??

First, there is no logical, moral, or financial reason a picture ID should not be required to vote in this country. The real reasons that those who protest so loudly against this are: 1) You can't easily steal an election. 2) Makes it harder to vote in multiple districts. 3) If go to get an ID your outstanding warrants may show up when your name hits the computer. 4) If you happen to get stopped by the law and have an ID they may find your outstanding warrants. 5) Makes it harder to commit fraud at the welfare office. 6) Makes it harder to cash stolen checks. 7) You might accidentally leave it at the bank you are robbing. 8) It's a lot easier to use someone else's water bill from a Section 8 renter who gets 12 of them a year to pass around.

I think showing ID is a good idea. I do not think it will sway stealing elections though, as this has been done using voting machines and other scams more so lately. When a county said they only had a couple votes for Ron Paul and more than a couple of people said, hey, thats not right, we all voted for him, the story did not make any front page news. You have to wonder though, is that just an isolated incident? I doubt it.

voter ID laws are akin to Jim Crow, poll taxes and all other kinds of disenfranchisement that happened in the 1950s and early 1960s. And our judicially activist Supreme Court of the United States have shown utter contempt for voters' rights, civil rights, women's rights and all other hard-fought rights that we had in the past 55 years. And it appears that the un-American right wing hacks on the Supreme Court will strike down the ONLY clear protection that non-white voters currently have: section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. should that happen, Congress should introduce a constitutional amendment to make it illegal for the states and areas currently covered under Section 5 to create new voter laws without the permission of the Justice Department and that amendment should include a penalty resulting in that state's/area's loss of overseeing their own elections for 40 years. Voter ID laws sound good, but the real intentions have been anything but. It has reduced no fraud because there was no fraud to begin with -- not even with ACORN. These voter ID laws serve one purpose and one purpose only: to disenfranchise voters who vote Democrat.
