Writer misunderstands global warming

The title of Marvin Murray's recent guest column, "Global warming debate riddled with inaccuracies" (May 10), is a good one, because his column is filled with falsehoods and misconceptions.

He claims there is no consensus that global warming is occurring, yet 97 percent of climate scientists do believe it's likely that man's industrial activities are contributing to long-term global warming. Mr. Murray labels this majority of climate scientists as fanatics, a mindless insult that weakens his own credibility.

Mr. Murray reveals a lack of understanding of the issue when he concludes global warming isn't happening, because some individual years in the past were warmer than recent years. Scientists admit average annual temperatures always have and will fluctuate. But they believe the unnatural increase in greenhouse gases is causing a long-term trend of increased average temperatures.

Mr. Murray wrote that human respiration was the real source of most of the carbon dioxide on the planet. This is a ridiculous falsehood. Humans do exhale carbon dioxide, but the amount is miniscule compared to the burning of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels resulted from the geological process that converted millions of generations of vast forests into coal and oil. Over the past 100 years, factories and cars have suddenly released the massive amount of carbon these fossilized plants slowly absorbed from the atmosphere over millions of years. Moreover, industrial activities release two other greenhouse gases (methane and nitrous oxide) that theoretically contribute to global warming.

Mr. Murray's source, the Nongovernmental Panel on Climate Change, is funded by Big Oil. Industry-funded think-tanks are not good, unbiased sources of information. A better source would be www.realclimate.org.

Unpublished

I think if we just poke another of them bid ole' holes in the ozone, you know, like we used to have....all of them bad ole' greenhouse gases would just slip into the void. Course then we might startup another ice age, but hey the pola' bears 'n such can just move to Sarasota. Then when we gets to cold, we can drive around in all then old pickemup trucks and SUV's and warm up the climate again.

Al Gore is not part of the

Al Gore is not part of the solution really, but regardless of him using it as a political stumping point in campaigns (the same as all politicians pretending to care about issues they care less about) does not change the fact that global warming is real. Unfortunately what is also real is it is so far gone now some scientists are not sure anything can reverse it. You cannot make up for the hole in the ozone layer.

Let's face it. Most

Let's face it. Most scientists are Democrats or liberals. They only want to investigate nature in order to invent schemes or invent things they can use to fool or trick the public and teach our kids their lies. The whole scientific establishment is in kahoots with the Obama adminstration to concoct research findings to pad their bank accounts and raise our taxes. They even invented the AIDS virus to purposely kill gays and blacks. I wouldn't trust any scientist even if they told us we were all going to die in the next year from an epidemic or asteroid if we did not do what they recommend. The anti-global warming crowd has convinced me that we should purge all scientists from our colleges and unversities. Then we can sit back and watch the stock markets soar when our economy is no longer suppressed by these greedly liars.

Most of the arguments in this

Most of the arguments in this forum seem to be faith based or simple emotional reaction.
You really ought to look at the numbers and the trends.
Has it warmed since the last ice age that we are currently coming out of. Yes, and it has warmed and cooled in the past.
Is man contributing to the warming? Probably - we have cut down forests, built cities, put out a ton of pollution SOME OF WHICH COOLS THE PLANET and some contributes to warming.
But everyone is arguing about a gas here that is probably not important at all. Just do the math.
CO2 is a small part of the atmosphere. 95% of the green house effect is from water vapour - the stuff that falls as rain and snow and makes clouds that moderate our climate variability. Methane and other gases make up about 2% leaving CO2 a measly 3% contribution. How much of that is from man? Some say 3%, but recent studies at Mona Loa have said it may be as high as 10% So, man's contribution is 0.3% of the greenhouse effect. If we were to follow Kyoto and spend trillions and trillions of dollars on reducing CO2 emissions we would reduce the impact on the earth by 0.06%.
Next post will talk about temperature impact

Followup - so man's

Followup - so man's contribution of CO2 impact is 0.06%. IPCC says the temperature is rising at 0.7 deg. C per century plus or minus 0.2 deg. So man's contribution to global warming from CO2 is 0.0006 times 0.7 or 0.004 degrees per century. And Obama and others want to spend trillions upon trillions to save us from that???

Wouldn't we be better off spending the money on cancer research, HIV, malaria, heart and stroke - health care and education. Even the IPCC scientists are saying there is little we can do about global warming at this point. So why are we all running around in CO2 circles chasing our tails?

We need to spend our money on stuff that matters.

We can easily adapt to temperature change.

We don't need to line Al Gore and David Blood's pockets (Blood and Gore) to work at stopping over fishing of the world's oceans or stopping deforestation. CO2 is a smoke screen that is stopping us from dealing with things that really matter.
