Video highlights from the South Aiken vs. Battery Creek first round of Class AAA South Carolina soccer playoffs.

AIKEN --- South Aiken senior Lee Quattlebaum lasted less than 20 minutes into the Thoroughbreds' first-round state playoff game against Battery Creek on Tuesday night.

Fellow forward Brett Van Pelt and the rest of the starters remained only through the first half.

It was exactly what Thoroughbreds coach Paul Waters said his team needed.

"We've played some good quality teams this year, and anytime we can get by with saving legs is good," he said.

Waters was able to substitute liberally in a 10-0 victory over the fourth-seeded Dolphins. South Aiken's starters grabbed the lead within the first 2 minutes on a Dan Riley goal.

Van Pelt, who assisted Riley on the first score, added two goals of his own on a pair of headers in the first 20 minutes for a 3-0 lead.

"Not exactly how I've been known to score, but I'll take them," Van Pelt said.

"We played pretty well, and we had a lot of guys get in who don't always get that chance, so it was a good night."

As the game went on, the Thoroughbreds displayed why they're the third-ranked team in Class AAA with plans to contend for a state title. The starters came out, but the goals never stopped.

"Every time we step on the field, we expect to win," Van Pelt said. "It doesn't matter who's out there."

Naylor's first of two goals came less than a minute after Van Pelt's second header. Riley added his second goal 4 minutes later to take a 5-0 lead. Brady Francis and Ronny Barnes added two more late in the first half for a 7-0 halftime lead.

"A game like this, we can use it in terms of building some depth," Waters said. "The second team got the entire second half and got in some quality minutes."

South Aiken's perfect night was wrapped up with a goal by Vishal Champaneri.

The little-used forward snuck behind the Battery Creek defense and scored with 3:50 remaining.

"He's never scored at the varsity level in his high school career," Waters said.

"That was good to see. That's what tonight was all about, boys pulling for each other on the field."

South Aiken, the top seed out of Region 5-AAA, will remain at home for its second-round game Thursday against Socastee, which defeated Lakewood 5-0 on Tuesday night in Myrtle Beach.
