Tigers unsettled at QB

CLEMSON, S.C. --- Spring practice did little to determine who will be the starting quarterback for Clemson in 2009.

The Tigers released a list Tuesday showing sophomore Willy Korn and freshman Kyle Parker sharing the role of first-team quarterback. Michael Wade is listed as a backup.

Coach Dabo Swinney said after the spring game that nothing had been settled at quarterback, where Korn and Parker have been competing to take over for 2008 starter Cullen Harper.

Whoever wins the starting job will get to hand off to returning senior C.J. Spiller, who chose to play his final season of college ball and pass up the NFL. Behind him are sophomore Jamie Harper and freshman Andre Ellington. The oft-injured Rendrick Taylor is projected as starter at fullback.

Starting at wide receiver are speedy senior Jacoby Ford, steady Terrance Ashe and unproven Xavier Dye.

The offensive line is made up of tackle Chris Hairston, center Mason Cloy and guards Thomas Austin and Antoine McClain. The right tackle spot is up for grabs between senior Cory Lambert, sophomore Landson Walker and newcomer J.K. Jay, who enrolled in January to take part in Clemson's spring drills.

Hairston, Austin and Cloy were all starters last season, although only Hairston did so at the same position where he is currently listed. Lambert and Walker also started for Clemson last season.

On defense, DeAndre McDaniel and Sadat Chambers were picked to start at safety, replacing NFL Draft picks Michael Hamlin and Chris Clemons. Last year, McDaniel was a linebacker.

Seniors Crezdon Butler and Chris Chancellor return at cornerback. Brandon Maye and Kavell Conner are back as starters at linebacker, joined by Scott Cooper, who saw extensive action there a year ago.

The defensive line figures to be one of Clemson's strengths next season, led by sophomore defensive end Da'Quan Bowers, who started six games as a freshman.

Ricky Sapp, injured late last year, is sharing the other end position with Kevin Alexander. Jarvis Jenkins is the nose guard and Brandon Thompson the tackle.

Spencer Benton is listed as the starting placekicker, taking over for Mark Buchholz. Dawson Zimmerman handles punts, replacing Jimmy Maners.

The Tigers open the season at home Sept. 5 against Middle Tennessee.
