The Pine Hill Commissioners.. a name sure to strike terror in opponents that value teamwork, speed, efficiency, and openness. Slogan "Huh?"
Panthers are fierce, while pirates might be a little too fierce.
Perhaps another "P" word would work for the mascot of Pine Hill Middle, Richmond County's newest school, which is set to open in August.
"I sort of like the panther," said Diamond Lakes Elementary Principal Glenda Collingsworth, who will serve as the new school's principal. "That is one that has come up quite a bit."
Mrs. Collingsworth said panthers are strong creatures known for being fierce, a good quality for athletics and a school mascot.
Some have also suggested the pirate, but that comes with a negative image.
Traditionally, mascots have been selected by faculty and staff. Pine Hill's mascot, though, could be chosen by someone in the community.
"I just wanted to do something different and have more parent and community involvement," Mrs. Collingsworth said.
Anyone may nominate a mascot by going to www.rcboe.org.
Mrs. Collingsworth and some of her staff will be speaking to Pine Hill's feeder schools next week and will ask their opinions also.
In 2006, Mrs. Collingsworth became the first principal of Diamond Lakes Elementary School, where faculty and staff chose the mascot -- the Gems, which are guarded by a dragon.
She said it was important to brand the school with a slogan, "a cut above the rest," that matched its mascot.
She hopes to do the same at Pine Hill.

the PINE HILL PATRIOTS might be a timely name. GGpap
I might add, while among Panthers (the animal) there are both females and males; however, the Panther is a cat, and cats are felines (females). Will your boys teams appreciate bearing a feline/female name on there jerseys? LOL! GGpap
Yeah, I like Pine Hill PATRIOTS! You can't go wrong with that. Have the red, white, and blue colors..would be easy to have a "real" mascot walking around, maybe at sporting events or up and down the halls. I think it'd be perfect and much better than the panthers.
The Pine Hill Pine Nuts. A non-offensive name with mild male overtones. PETA will never force a change and the commissioners should be able to relate. Any opposing team will be so confused trying to figure out the school emblem they will be "easy pickings" in competition. The potential play on words would make the cheers fun.
How about "PorcuPines"? The t-shirt motto can say "We will quill you!"
Howbout we come up with a better name for the SCHOOL?
PT, with that one you made me laugh (pleasantly) GGpap
"Cones"... they be cone heads. Mascot with a cone head like on Saturday Live!
Well, if we're going for alliteration, why not re-name all of the mascots? Westside could gladly give up its Patriots logo to Pine Hill. Then we could have the Westside Wildcats. How about the Richmond Academy Ranch Hands? And maybe the Laney Llamas. The Copeland Cowboys has a good ring. Maybe the Butler Buck Dancers would be cute. How about the Tutt Troubadors?
Ha! These are easily the best comments by online readers yet. Glad to see creativity is alive and well in the CSRA.
As an animal rights lover, I find naming any school mascot after an animal to be highly offensive. Why not name it after something human? Like: Indians, Redskins, Chiefs, Rebels, etc.
Pine Hill Piranhas.
I believe something lkie "Road Kill" or "Loud Barks" or "pelts" would be nice if we have to name it after an animal. I am all for naming it after an animal so we wouldn't offend the rights of humans.
Pine Hill Lumberjacks makes a connection to the name.
Pine Hill Pine Knots.......they're tough and they'll light your fire!
Pine Hill Park Rats (In honor of all those fine movable homes in Hephzibah)
They could be the Pine Hill Politicians....with the slogan....Lie, Cheat, and Steal....YES WE CAN!
Pine Hill Thrill...play BB King when they come on the field...
Huh-Huh, he said "P-word".
I like the patriots but their colors are green and gold.
Green and Gold, huh? How about "The Pine Hills Plunderers" ?
US Army soldiers are patriots, aren't they? I think it's a great name!
Like army green? Could work.
PLEASE PLEASE do NOT make the mascot golf-related!!! To honor a sport that is so exclusive and only one aspect of this great city is ridiculous. They took a respected, perfectly fine baseball team, the Pirates, and changed it to Green Jackets, and they named the hockey team the Lynx. Enough.
Pine Hills Par Fours
Pine Hill Putters
Pine Hill WoodPeckers, you f--- with us and you'll get splinters.
Pine Hill Pencils- why not name them after something non-animal or human to be really politically correct? It makes them sound more academic
you could always use peaches
