Interesting how modern homophobic Christians pick and choose their moral issues.
For example, they would never insist the Old Testament death penalty for adultery be applied now. And yet they make statements like: "With gay marriage, fewer would marry or remain sexually faithful." Where is the proof of that statement? How do they know?
Or: "More children would be raised without married mothers and fathers." Have you seen the divorce rate lately? And would it not be better that all children have someone to love them whether it's two heterosexuals or two gay people, or even one gay person?
Or this: "We'd be forced to subsidize homosexual relationships." Hello?
Homosexuals want the same things all people want - a job, a home, a relationship. Sexual preference is a personal thing just as religion is - t'ain't nobody else's business. And a homosexual is no less entitled than someone who has blue eyes or green eyes, a blond or a redhead, or a person with white skin or black.
Hatred for homosexuals does not represent the true spirit of Jesus. Jesus said to love one another, not to love one another unless they are gay. Just simply love one another.

Yes, we are to "love one another". The bible also teaches to love the sinner but hate the sin. It is clear in scripture that among other sins listed homosexuality is not pleasing to God. In all things let God be the judge. Jesus told the harlot to "go and sin no more", she had to change her ways.
Arielle S., although I do not "believe" in your Christ, your letter is well stated and well meant; and I agree with its intent. Unfortunately, there are those out there that wear the armor of hatred, homophobia, and just plain ignorance; therefore, your message will not penetrate their shields (which I would call their bible) and they will turn it against you for daring to call for unqualified love for all mankind, including those that may be homosexual. Many pro-gay people say, "If you don't agree totally with me you're a hate filled homophobe". Or they'll say, "If you don't totally agree with me you're ignorant and don't know that today's people love [filtered word]". Or they'll say,"If you don't grant special dispensation for homosexuals to be declared the same as straights, you're denying the rights of gays". Or they'll say, "If you object to the special dispensation gays demand, you're a latent homo". And they'll repeat these comments over and over and over. They'll use terms like "[filtered word] are born because of a gene. It's not a choice" and anyone that doesn't agree is "hate filled and ignorant". ad nauseum. We've heard it every day and Hollywood puts it in every movie and tv show. The gay movement has become today's "global warming". And, if you're not part of the train, you're hate filled and ignorant. So don't be a homophobe. Promote homosexuality every chance you get to prove your liberal "humanistic" stand. (knowledge is optional, obviously)

jsherrill, just as you write that the bible "teaches" you to hate the sin you are proving my point about hatred. The operative word is "hate," and as I wrote, you are wearing the armor of hatred because the bible teaches you to do so. Love the sinner, hate the sin is no more that religious spin; a way to justify hatred for life styles you do not wish to tolerate. Do you also love pedophiles, child molesters, rapists, Osama bin Laden? If so, do you, as many christians do, call for the death penalty for any of the above (and bin Laden in particular)? Well, perhaps executing sinners" is just another way for christians to exercise their love for the sinner.
Hatred, "fear" (homophobia) and ignorance are only three of the negative components that contribute to the armor that christians don daily as they venture out into the world of mythical dragons, Sister. By the way: Webster's also extends the meaning of homophobia to include: "irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals," pick your poison. GGpap

I am endlessly amazed at the so called Christians that pick and choose the parts of the Bible that they will adhere. The Bible says that it is an abomination for a man to lie with a man or a woman to lie with a woman. I assume that this part is to be ignored because it is "politically incorrect" or God didn't REALLY mean it "that way". Either be a total Christian or shut up. Jesus said that a luke-warm Christian is no Christian at all-"I will spit thee out".

We are ALL sinners. The ground at the foot of the cross is a level playing field. Sin is sin. Yours or my sin is no less than someone else's, just because we rationalize it to be so.
